Harvard prof Gates arrested on allegedly racist charges

Henry Louis Gates, Jr., a distinguished black scholar at Harvard University, was arrested last Thursday by Cambridge police for disorderly conduct at his home. The city of Cambridge and the Cambridge Police Department recommended in a joint statement yesterday that the charges be dropped. The arrest, the statement said, was "regrettable and unfortunate." "This incident should not be viewed as one that demeans the character and reputation of Professor Gates or the character of the Cambridge Police Department," the statement continued. TUPD Alert: Indecent exposure on College Ave.

Tufts University Police Department (TUPD) reported today a case of indecent exposure on College Avenue in Somerville. The incident occurred at approximately 12:20 a.m. today near Tufts' football field, according to a TUPD announcement. "A female was walking on College Ave. when a male walking from the Cohen Parking Lot area approached her and exposed himself," the announcement said. "The subject was described as an Asian male, approx. 5’6”, with a medium build, short black hair. He was wearing dark blue or black gym shorts and a white colored jacket." Tufts alum Hormats selected for top State position

The White House announced yesterday that Tufts alum Robert Hormats was nominated to be undersecretary of state for economic, energy, and agricultural affairs. Hormats, who is currently vice chairman of Goldman Sachs, is no stranger to politics. Among a variety of governmental positions, he previously served as assistant secretary of state for economic and business affairs from 1981 to 1982 and was a senior economic advisor on the National Security Council from 1969 to 1977. Hormats graduated from Tufts in 1965 with a Bachelor's degree in economics and political science and went on to earn Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1966 and 1970, respectively. TUPD Alert: Robbery on Conwell Ave.

Tufts University Police Department (TUPD) reported yesterday a strong-armed robbery that took place yesterday morning at 2:30 a.m. The incident took place on Conwell Avenue near Curtis Street. Two suspects were walking toward the victim, stopped and told him to give them his money. He did. At this time, the two suspects hurriedly walked down Curtis Street toward Powderhouse Boulevard. The victim was not injured.   The victim described the suspects as follows: Suspect 1 is a black male, 6'3" tall, wearing a black hoodie with a white logo. Suspect 2 is a black male 5' 10" tall wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans.   TUPD offered no additional comment this morning.
