Tufts ranks as having the highest price tag in the state this year, according to a report Sunday in the Chronicle of Higher Education. The university’s tuition, fees and room and board, $51,088 in total, mark the highest of all higher education institutions in Massachusetts.

The university’s charges represent a 3.5 percent increase from last year.

“I hope that there's a good reason for the fact that we have the highest tuition,” junior Makiko Harris said. “It seems like there are other schools in Massachusetts that we could get a pretty comparable education at. It doesn't seem that that much money is necessary.”

Director of Public Relations Kim Thurler could not be reached for comment last night.

Nearby Boston-area schools are also sporting high price tags. Harvard University comes in at $48,684, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) costs $49,142 and Boston College and Boston University weigh in at $50,970 and $50,288, respectively.

The newest tuition report comes as an increasing number of schools are breaking the $50,000 barrier. Fifty-eight private colleges nationwide carry price tags that surpass the $50,000 mark, dynamically up from last year when only five colleges had tuitions that topped the barrier, according to the Nov. 1 Chronicle article.

In response to the news, students wondered what the benefits were to them.

“That’s pretty shocking actually,” senior James Kennedy said. “So we’re the school that charges the most in the state but our library printers still don’t work?”

Harris agreed. “Where does it even go?” he asked. “It's concerning because in this economy, it's hard to get jobs that will be lucrative enough to pay back student loans.”
