Interview | Pickard discusses Senate's goals, return of embezzled funds
9/30/08 9:32 AM
Executive News Editor Giovanni Russonello sat down last week with Tufts Community Union President Duncan Pickard for the inaugural edition of Tufts Daily Radio, the Daily's news radio show on WMFO. Pickard had some interesting things to say about the Senate's plans for this coming school year and what the group will be doing with the large amount of funding that was recently returned as repayment for the money allegedly embezzled by two former administrators. A male who is not a Tufts student allegedly attacked a university police officer as the officer attempted to arrest him near Sophia Gordon Hall early Saturday morning. The Tufts University Police Department (TUPD) received a call at 1:21 a.m. on Sept. 6 saying that an individual had entered the Zeta Psi fraternity at 80 Professors Row without permission. The individual fled out the back of the house toward Latin Way and Talbot Avenue, according to a police report. When police followed in that direction, they saw a crowd of people standing on Talbot Avenue in front of Sophia Gordon Hall, TUPD Sgt. Robert McCarthy told me during a conversation today. The group was watching two white males who were wandering away from the crowd, yelling at each other. An officer returned to Zeta Psi to...At TCU Senate Candidates Meeting, seniors fill vacated seats
9/5/08 3:57 PM
After last night’s Tufts Community Union (TCU) Candidates Meeting, the makeup of this year’s Senate has become clearer. Three senior seats came into play this summer after a series of resignations, including one by former presidential hopeful Elton Sykes. Ryan Pallathra, Christine Mumma and Mary Langan were the only seniors to apply for the three posts, so they will become senators without an election. In another set of unchallenged bids, freshman John Peter Kaytrosh won a seat on the judiciary and junior Brandon Sultan and freshman Andrew Thorne filled two of three available seats on the Committee on Student Life (CSL). 21 freshmen also attended the Candidates Meeting to declare their respective candidacies. They will vie for the Senate’s seven Class of 2012 seats....Dancing outside the bottle...

The Tufts Community Union (TCU) Senate is making good on a promise from last fall to help make Tufts water bottle-free. Tap water served in biodegradable cups will replace the typical Poland Spring offerings at Friday night’s Fall Ball. Cups made of corn and large, plastic water coolers filled with tap water will take the place of the 3,000 bottles usually offered to students, TCU Vice President Scott Silverman told us. The switch follows a resolution passed by the Senate last November that called on the administration to reduce its spending on bottled water at university-sponsored events and to encourage the use of tap water on campus. Silverman, one of the senators in charge of Fall Ball, said that this year’s change falls “in line with that resolution and in line...Summer reading author: drinking water a global crisis

Robert Morris delivered a stirring lecture in Cohen Auditorium last night on threats to the drinking water supply in America and around the world. Tufts gave out Morris' book, “The Blue Death: Disease, Disaster, and the Water We Drink,” to all members of the Class of 2012 this summer as optional pre-Matriculation reading. A researcher who taught at Tufts Medical School from 1996 to 2002, Morris used his talk to cover a variety of subjects, including the story of John Snow and the fight against cholera in London, the present day problems with the American water supply and the direr problem of clean drinking water availability in many developing nations. Morris drew many parallels to the fight against global warming, calling the drinking water issue “an inconvenient...
