1/25/09 5:38 PM
Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine recently announced its list of the 100 best values in U.S. private colleges, with Tufts ranking as 19th on the list.

According to Kiplingers.com, total costs of attendance at Tufts are $50,158 and average debt is $20,668. The California Institute of Technology, Yale University and Princeton University round out the top three, respectively.

Leaking pipes, no running water in Haskell
1/19/09 2:01 PM
A reader forwarded us two e-mails Monday morning from Kara Hubbard, the residential director for Haskell Hall. According to the messages, leaking pipes caused a "waterfall" that led to the accumulation of inches of water in the Haskell basement: ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kara E. Hubbard <Kara.Hubbard@tufts.edu> Date: Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 10:33 AM Subject: haskell waterfall To: haskell-tilton2008@elist.tufts.edu Hi Haskell Residents, I just wanted to let you know that I have called TUPD regarding the waterfall situation in the 210s stairwell. Please avoid this stairwell until the issue can be addressed- there are already inches of water accumulating on the basement-level. Thanks, Kara ----------------------- It appears that the Somerville...ExCollege to host inauguration party
1/16/09 6:40 PM
Can’t make it down to D.C. for the presidential inauguration? The Experimental College will host an Inauguration Viewing Party in the campus center on Tuesday, for students planning on watching the historic event from the other Hill. The swearing-in ceremonies for President-elect Barack Obama will be projected onto a large screen set up in the lower atrium area by the Commons, with two televisions in Hotung Café simultaneously showing the goings on. The party will begin at 11 a.m. and probably last until around 1 p.m. Co-sponsored by the Office for Campus Life and Retail Dining Services, the event comes on the heels of the ExCollege’s widely successful Nov. 4 election celebration. Around 700 people attended then, according to ExCollege Assistant Director Cindy Stewart....TUPD safety alert: Student robbed on College Avenue

1/14/09 1:43 PM
In an e-mail to the student body today, University President Lawrence Bacow asked students to read and reflect on President-Elect Barack Obama's campaign speech about race relations in America. The speech, which Obama delivered on March 18, 2008, attempted to contextualize controversial videos of the candidate's former pastor and discuss the larger issue of race in the United States. In his e-mail, Bacow wrote that he originally wanted to ask students to examine the speech when it was first delivered, but decided against it so as to avoid appearing to endorse any candidate in the presidential race. The full text of Bacow's e-mail is below: ----------------- from: OfficeOfThePresident@tufts.edu to: presidential-all@elist.tufts.edu date: Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:09 PM subject: A Short...Weather advisories, parking restrictions declared in Medford and Somerville
1/10/09 2:41 PM
With weather forecasts predicting between five and eight inches of snow accumulation in the Boston area tonight, the cities of Medford and Somerville have both declared snow emergencies today that will affect parking rules around Tufts (which straddles the Medford/Somerville border). In Somerville, a snow emergency went into effect at 3:00 p.m. Saturday. Until the emergency is lifted, parking is only allowed on the odd-numbered side of any street in Somerville unless otherwise posted. Ticketing and towing will begin at 7:00 p.m. for any cars that have not been moved. If parking is not available on the street, there are several public parking lots designated by the city for snow parking. (You can find a list here). The Medford Police Department has declared a snow emergency beginning at...Richardson withdraws name as Commerce nominee
1/4/09 9:42 PM
Tufts alum Gov. Bill Richardson (D-N.M.) today withdrew his name from consideration for Commerce secretary in the incoming Obama administration due to allegations stemming from a federal grand jury investigation in New Mexico. Richardson (A ’70, F ’71) said in a statement that he had “concluded that the ongoing investigation … would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process.” The grand jury has been looking into charges of a “pay-to-play” scheme in relation to a New Mexico state contract awarded to a California company that contributed to Richardson. President-elect Barack Obama said in a statement that he accepted Richardson’s resignation “with deep regret,” praising the governor and pledging to provide...
