Tufts warns students about "swine flu," stresses importance of prevention

As news of the potential spread of the so-called "swine flu," an aggressive strain of influenza that has led to over 100 deaths in Mexico, continues to surface, Tufts sent students, staff and faculty an e-mail today stressing the importance of hygiene and prevention. In the message, representatives from Public Safety, Health Services, and the University-Wide Task Force on Pandemic Planning assured students that the university is monitoring the outbreak and offered general tips to students about how best to prevent infection. Ludacris still on for Spring Fling

The rap artist Ludacris will perform at Spring Fling tomorrow, despite rumors suggesting otherwise, Concert Board confirmed this afternoon.

Rumors circulated on Facebook.com today that Ludacris had canceled his headline performance tomorrow. Concert Board Co-Chairs Rob Seiden and Alan Munkacsy, both juniors, said today that those rumors were wrong.

"Ludacris did not cancel on us," Seiden said. "That is a total rumor. We can confirm that Ludacris will be playing at Spring Fling tomorrow."

Both Muncaksy and Seiden said that they had not heard the rumors before the Daily contacted them. The annual Spring Fling concert is set to proceed as planned, they said.

"We're totally on schedule," Seiden said.

Jacqueline Novogratz, the CEO and founder of the nonprofit Acumen Fund, spoke at the Cabot Intercultural Center on April 10 about her philosophy on social change through entrepreneurship and microfinance-related investments. The Institute for Global Leadership (IGL) and the IGL's Empower Program sponsored her visit. Acumen Fund aims to alleviate poverty by investing in the poor, acting similarly to a venture capital fund. Novogratz's new book, "The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap Between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World," was published last month. Freshman election goes off without a hitch

After three elections for the same seven Tufts Community Union Senate seats, the freshman class finally has its representatives.

Freshmen Aaron Bartel, Danielle Cotter, Jon Danzig, Kate de Klerk, Tomas Garcia, Joel Greenberg and Nunu Luo emerged victorious in yesterday’s vote for the Class of 2012 Senate seats.
   
The election proceeded smoothly throughout the day, with no glitches, according to Elections Commission Chair Adam Weldai.
   
“This was ... incredibly clean and functioned perfectly,” Weldai, a senior, said. “There was literally nothing that went wrong.”

Deborah Digges, poet and Tufts English professor, dies at 59

The Tufts administration informed students today of the death of Tufts Professor of English and nationally renowned poet Deborah Digges. According to the e-mail, Digges passed away over the weekend. Tufts will hold a tribute service for Digges at 5:30 p.m. on  Wendesday, April 15 in the Coolidge Room. An article in the University of Massachusetts Daily Collegian today reported that Digges' death occurred on Friday night near a stadium at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Daily reporters are currently working to determine the details of her death.
