A long-overdue hello

It’s taken me long enough, but I’m finally posting to the Newsroom.

The copy editors’ pens are scribbling, the music is turned down a bit and we’re putting the final touches on our layouts. As I type this from our offices in the basement of Curtis Hall, we’re in the final minutes of our first full week of daily production.

Things are looking a bit different this semester, especially in the Web realm, and we’re already pleased with the results. Our New Media Department, a new addition, is up and running smoothly in large part thanks to a very (frighteningly?) committed executive, Arlin Ladue.

In Thursday’s Web edition, for example, we published a video with students’ reactions to the recent controversy surrounding a racially charged flyer posted on campus, a video of Professor Vali Nasr on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and a slideshow accompanying an article on WMFO’s new record label.

We’re already seeing the increased traffic these sorts of things supposedly bring, and the anecdotal evidence of Web comments makes us feel as though readers (increasingly, “viewers”) are relatively happy with the additions.

To read something I should have posted on this blog a while ago – the letter I wrote for our first issue of the year – click here.

If things go as they should, this will be the first of many posts from the editor’s chair – and I hope they will give a better view into what it's like to sit here.
