WMFO DJ Spotlight: Dwijo Goswami
9/30/08 12:54 AM
Sophomore Dwijo Goswami flicks a few switches until a red light indicates that he is on air. It’s a little past noon on a rainy Friday afternoon, and the sound of The Ramones has just faded from the speakers. “This is The Weirdness,” Goswami says into the mic, “and as usual, I’m late with my opening announcement.” He divulges the names of the eclectic music choices he has just placed side by side, ranging from an Australian indie-pop tune to one by a Chicago jazz band. “The Weirdness” is all about the unexpected. Goswami simply likes seeing the ways in which various genres can be mixed, songs juxtaposed to highlight their similarities and differences. “I’m obsessed with music, a complete audiofile,” he confessed. ...Living it Up: Your guide to an Arts-filled weekend

Homeward Bound This weekend there will be plenty of Homecoming activities to conjure up some Jumbo spirit in everyone. There are many events planned including the Pep Rally today at 5 p.m. in the Campus Center, and the Homecoming A cappella show featuring the 'Bubs, 'Mates and Jills tonight at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. in Goddard Chapel. But what if you aren't into all of the jolly, spirited activities? Here are a couple fun alternatives for this weekend both on and off campus. Screen Time This weekend sees the release of a few big films. The thriller "Eagle Eye," drama "Miracle at St. Anna," and the Chuck Palahniuk 'dramedy' "Choke" will be showing throughout Boston. If you are looking to save a few bucks, catch "Eagle Eye" at the Somerville...Afro DZ ak Album Release Party, 9/24/08 at Bill’s Bar (with Audio Slideshow)
9/25/08 2:33 PM
(Scroll down to see an audio slideshow of this event) Note to all international students: if you plan on seeing a concert in the Boston area, even if you are under-age, make sure you bring your passport. The Daily learned this the hard way and, after a mere two-hour delay, your intrepid journalists gained entry to Bill’s Bar on Landsdowne st. and, thanks to the superior punctuality and dedication of a certain Daily photographer, we did not miss one second of Afro DZ ak’s performance. The venue, literally across the street from Fenway Park, is an intimate venue with a prominent, expensive bar, but the low cover charge and relatively thin Wednesday night crowd made it a warm, welcoming setting for live music. About one hundred friendly, well-dressed young professionals turned...2008 Emmys Recap
9/23/08 1:21 AM
On Sunday night only the most famous stars of television gathered to honor the best (supposedly) in the business. To celebrate the new category of Outstanding Host for a Reality Program, all five of the nominees helped co-host the event; hosts included the beautiful Heidi Klum, the obnoxious Ryan Seacrest, and that creepy bald guy Howie Mandel. Big winners of the night included Tina Fey and her precious baby “30 Rock,” as well as the HBO miniseries “John Adams” (2008). Having never seen “30 Rock,” and never having met anyone who has seen “30 Rock,” it is extremely surprising that the show has won Best Comedy two years in a row. “30 Rock” not only beat out smash hits like “Entourage” and “The Office,”...Metallica “Death Magnetic” review for hardcore fans
9/21/08 11:28 PM
Some of you might have caught the review of Metallica’s “Death Magnetic” that ran the Daily last Wednesday, Sept. 17. But if you’re a hardcore Metallica fan, and you know who you are, the release of “Death Magnetic” comes with many mixed emotions and questions beyond the scope of that article. After the disaster that was “St. Anger,” the band was in danger of losing itself in the nu-metal world in which it longed so desperately to fit. That said, “Death Magnetic” was pumped up by the media to be "the return of the old Metallica," meaning the pre-Bob Rock days. Obviously, there’s no way the guys were capable of returning to the mind-crushing potency of their 1980’s days, but taking their sound back to...Living it Up: Your guide to an Arts-filled weekend

9/16/08 2:18 AM
Last Thursday Anthony Green, the lead singer of groups such as Saosin (before Cove Reber) and Circa Survive, gave audiences a solo show they will never forget. Green was joined by bands Person L and Good Old War at Harper’s Ferry in Allston, MA. This modest venue has a stage smaller than Dewick’s and holds far less people. The bartenders are constantly occupied and college football plays throughout the night, even as acts are performing. This place doesn’t seem like a venue, but more like a bar without tables and chairs. For a better concert experience, head to the Roxy off of Tremont Street… that’s a real venue. However, After stumbling through the streets of Allston, finding Harper’s Ferry was an easy task; the sidewalk was filled with scenesters,...New: Download or listen to the September mixtape

Welcome to The Scene, the newest addition to the quickly growing Tufts Daily blogosphere. This blog, run by our arts department (which runs one of the only daily arts sections in the country), will seek to bring the art and artists we cover beyond the boundaries of the printed page. Expect this space to be rich with videos, music, pictures and more -- along with the skilled analysis and great reviews you're used to reading in the paper every day. To start, we'll be running a few once-a-week features that will be worth coming back for. Each week, we'll showcase our favorite Internet video, provide a playlist of music picks from our staff, and highlight one article from the paper that's worth a second look. So make sure to keep an eye on this space to stay connected to Tufts' thriving...
