Filmmaker Returns to Tufts for Screening of 'Shades of Ray'

11/23/08 8:05 PM

Jaffar Mahmood (LA '90), who was featured in last week’s Weekender Interview, knew he wanted to make movies a long time before he even began writing the script for what would become “Shades of Ray,” which screened last night in Braker 001. The film was written, directed, and produced by Mahmood, and for this Daily reporter, redefined what could be qualified as “Indie” film. The movie is based around the love life of Ray Rehman, a 20-something Tufts Grad living in LA attempting to make it as an actor, and the influence his ethnicity exerts on his romantic choice. Ray’s father is Pakistani and his mother a white Catholic, leading him to question his choice to marry a white woman when another Ethnic female “mutt,” as he calls it, comes into... 1 comment

Torn Ticket knows what makes audiences 'Tick'

11/19/08 9:31 PM

Torn Ticket II’s fall minor show, “Tick, Tick...BOOM!” played to an extremely receptive audience Tuesday night – the last night of its two-night run. The intimate space of Barnum 008 aided a personal experience with the production – many times the actors could look into the faces of the audience or, in one case, air guitar in their laps. The rock band on stage, led commendably smoothly by senior Kris Coombs, was full of energy kept the pace of the show high and exciting.     For a more detailed description of the play, about a rock-musical composer concerned with growing up, selling out and "slacker" culture see the preview in Tuesday's issue of the Daily.     Though the play deals with fairly heavy...

11/7/08 12:29 AM

For a sophisticated outing (with booze) November may have snuck up on you, but mfafirstfridays is this very weekend - an event held at the MFA from 5:30 - 9:30 pm at the Koch Gallery (if you're 21 +). No food or beverages are allowed in the galleries on a normal museum day, but "signature cocktails," a tapas menu, and live music make for a more laid back museum scene. Oh, and you also get to look at some art. Live music will include Four Piece Suit, an instrumental group including bass, sax, guitar, and drums. Check out the MFA website for more details. Let there be rock It's been eight years since AC/DC have released an album of new material, let alone tour in support of one. This Sunday, if you can finagle tickets, the legendary rockers hit the TD Banknorth Garden for what...

Seftel Visits Tufts for Screening of 'War, Inc.'

11/2/08 2:44 PM

Director and Tufts grad Joshua Seftel (A ’90) returned to campus on Wednesday night for a screening of his latest film, “War, Inc.” (2008) in an event sponsored by the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service and the Communications and Media Studies Program. Though he has traditionally worked on documentaries, Seftel was excited pleased with this project as it afforded him the opportunity to work on such an explosive topic in his first feature film. “War, Inc,”the brainchild of famed actor John Cusack, is the story of a near-future in which military contractors have become enormously powerful global corporations specializing in regime change, security and, most importantly, publicity. Cusack plays the starring role of Brand Hauser, a hit man for the... 0 comment
