Winter Break Movie Preview
12/8/08 7:09 PM
Even though the Daily won’t be in print again until January, the movie industry will fortunately (or unfortunately for some flops) be churning out different films for you to see as you sit around your house with nothing to do. Here is a preview of a few of those films, including trailers and a hype meter based on the anticipation surrounding the movie. "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (12/12) Starring: Keanu Reeves This classic 1951 film is about to get a little more stoned as Keanu Reeves steps into the role of a weird alien type thing that is warning of the impending doom of mankind. It makes sense that Reeves would return to the genre that made him famous, especially after “The Lake House” (2006). Since the original was so great, it is going to be...Film Breaks Down B-Boy Phenomenon

The Tufts Pan Asian Council wrapped up activities for Asian American month last night with a free screening of "Planet B-Boy" (2007) in Barnum 008. The movie was free, but in order to view it one had to pass by a table overflowing with baked goods, available with a suggested donation. The proceeds from the event went to the Refugee and Immigrant Assistance Center in Jamaica Plain. The Center has historically helped with re-locating African refugees, but in recent years has expanded its services to include aiding the settling and well-being of immigrants from Burma/Myanmar. "[The Center] has about twenty families currently," said Sarah Robbins, a senior on the Pan-Asian Council. "They all need clothing, electricity...just everything. We also want to help...Arts Editors' Mixtape | December 2008

Emma’s Pick: "Sing for You" by Tracy Chapman from "Our Bright Future" (2008) All of Tracy Chapman's music is distinctive and mature, but in this song, the Tufts alum singer-songwriter really hits her stride with remarkable ease. At...WMFO DJ Spotlight: Freestyle Cyphers
12/1/08 12:48 AM
It’s 11 p.m. on a Thursday night and the party is just winding up in the Tufts radio station. The lights dim and DJ Afroman, with hair to match his on-air alias, leans into the mic to call out: “Yo yo yo! Let’s get it poppin’!” Cue the beat, being spun on the mixers by a couple students. With music pounding in their headphones, rappers spit lyrics at each other with incredible speed. In the packed station, more than 15 spectators provide a cadence of “oh’s” and bopping heads to complement verses ranging from city life to Larry Bacow. The next hour in the uppermost floor of Curtis Hall is dedicated to live rap battles and hip-hop beats, courtesy of WMFO’s Freestyle Cyphers show. Founded by senior Isaac Emmanuel (DJ...
