Browne and McCooey head to ITA Nationals

10/14/09 10:21 PM

Tri-captains Julia Browne and Meghan McCooey of the women's tennis team will team up once again at the ITA Small College National Championships this weekend in Mobile, Ala., looking to defend the doubles title they captured there a year ago. The duo drew the No. 2 seed for the tournament, which features the winners of the eight ITA regional tournaments that were held in September. At the New England championships, Browne and McCooey beat out a field of the region's 32 best doubles teams, winning a come-from-behind thriller against Williams' Grace Baljon and Taylor French in the final. Browne finished as the runner up at the ITA New England singles championship, but received an invitation to represent the region at Nationals when champion Kristin Alotta of Williams opted not to attend....

5/8/09 10:37 AM

UPDATE, Thursday, 3:06 p.m. Here is a box score from today's game, courtesy of the Tufts Athletics website. Emerson knocked off host Endicott 5-1, setting up a matchup between the fifth-seeded Lions and top-seeded Jumbos tomorrow at 2 p.m. Join us again tomorrow as we bring you updates from Tufts' second-round contest. After the way they looked today, there's a whole lot of reason to believe the Jumbos are just beginning a special postseason run. UPDATE, Thursday, 12:23 p.m. A strikeout and a ground out end it after five. Two K's for Tong in that frame. Tufts wins 17-1. Tufts moves on to a matchup tomorrow against the winner of the Endicott-Emerson four-five matchup at 2 p.m. Back for more later.   UPDATE, Thursday, 12:21 p.m. Tong threw a pitch to the backstop...

Live Blog: Men's lacross @ Middlebury

4/12/09 11:11 AM

Also surprised the Jumbos didn't go to McNally's potent left hand for the final shot of the day. Today wasn't Harrigan's best in the cage, Middlebury seemed to win the majority of the draws particularly in the second half, preventing the offense from having as many chances as their opponents. Certainly strong efforts from the whole team, though. Nobody was ever slacking, maybe just some poor decision making. The game really came down to stupid errors and not taking care of the ball on Tufts' part. Too much loose ball garbage that led to Middlebury goals. The Jumbos suffer their second loss of the season and Middlebury takes sole possession of the NESCAC lead. Final score, Middlbury 11, Tufts 10. Last attempt by D.J. Hessler crushed as he was pushed into the crease and a crease...

Tonight’s the Night

3/30/09 6:04 PM

Tonight, the most important game that I will have witnessed in my young life will take place.  My beloved Gonzaga Bulldogs square off against the North Carolina Tar Heels, my least favorite entity in all of sports.  How can this be so important when it’s only a Sweet Sixteen game, you ask?  Not only does this mark the paramount good versus evil game for me, but I also feel a particular import to this year’s Zags team.  Since last year’s disappointing first-round exit against Davidson (how does the NIT taste, Steph Curry?), I’ve told myself that this would be Gonzaga’s year.  The most talented big man in the program’s history, Josh Heytvelt, is a senior, as are gritty, physical point guard Jeremy Pargo and long-range bomber Micah...

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

3/30/09 6:04 PM

The first week of the NCAA basketball tournament is without a doubt, hands down, the best thing that sports has to offer.  When I tell people how much I love March Madness, most just assume that I’m being sarcastic and exaggerating to a ridiculous degree.  Nope.  I actually believe that the three best days of the year -- every year -- are (in no particular order) Selection Sunday and the first Thursday and Friday of the tournament.  16 games each day; make or break, do or die, win or go home for every single team still playing.  There are no tomorrows in March -- only today matters.  In March, you’ve got to give 110 percent; leave it all on the court.  And you know what? Every single one of these pathetically tired clichés are...
