With Frank Doble's (A '11) posthumous donation of $136 million earlier this month, Tufts' Beyond Boundaries capital campaign surged ahead of pace and is now set to reach its goal on time. The funds drive, which is seeking to raise $1.2 billion for university improvements and supplements to its endowment, has already raised $875 million and reeled in 73 percent of its goal.…

Standalone | Common, Dropkicks rock Presidents Lawn

Common rocked the crowd at Spring Fling on Saturday with his empassioned set. "Who loves hip hop?" he asked the energetic crowd. Headliners The Dropkick Murphys turned up the heat at the end of the afternoon, capping their set with back-to-back performances of "I'm Shipping up to Boston" and "Dirty Water.…

The Middlesex District Attorney's Office is still investigating former Director of Student Activities Jodie Nealley's alleged embezzlement of the student activities fund. Nealley was fired on Nov. 9 after allegedly pilfering approximately $300,000 from Tufts.…

Silverman wins TCU VP, Shapanka is new treasurer

The Tufts Community Union (TCU) Senate elected a new executive board, Senate committee chairs and Allocations Board (ALBO) chairs during in-house elections conducted last night. The newly elected members of the 2008-2009 TCU Senate selected sophomore Scott Silverman as vice president, junior Matt Shapanka as treasurer, senior Antonella Sarcano as historian and sophomore C.…

The Tufts Community Union (TCU) Elections Commission (ECOM) announced yesterday that a referendum featuring three amendments to the TCU constitution had passed, despite an appeal. Two of the amendments, all of which appeared on last week's ballot, will change the process by which student groups are able to hold community representative seats in the Senate.…

In addition to the $136-million gift from Frank Doble (A '11), many other recent donations have helped the Beyond Boundaries campaign in its quest for $1.2 billion. The fundraising drive has drawn on gifts from almost 82,000 friends, alumni, foundations and organizations.…

When Tufts sophomore Julie* made a visit to her doctor in her home state of New York last summer to take care of a wheezing cough, she didn't anticipate the long string of bills and phone calls that would ensue. Julie, who is covered by the Tufts' student insurance plan, said that because her visit was categorized as preventative care - which is not covered by the Tufts student health plan - she was told she would have to pay the $350 bill out of pocket.…

A student fights back and forth with her insurance company over reimbursement for more than a year, with her bills being sent to collection agencies in the meantime. Another eschews health care altogether despite his crippling injury in order to avoid the almost-guaranteed financial battle that visiting a doctor would spark.…

The men's lacrosse team's season came to a sudden end on Sunday, as the team suffered a stunning 14-6 defeat to the sixth-seeded Williams Ephs (8-5, 5-5 NESCAC) in the first round of the NESCAC Tournament. The Jumbos (9-6, 6-4 NESCAC) entered the game as the No.…

After the success of its breakthrough 2003 album "Page Avenue," Story of the Year has struggled to define its identity in the strange rock scene of the day. The band's sophomore release for Maverick Records, "In the Wake of Determination" (2006), charted poorly, failed to spawn a successful single and, even worse for fans, strayed from the band's screamo-rock roots to a more metal direction.…

Although nearly half of the junior class at Tufts opts to take a respite from the Hill to study abroad, those with disciplinary issues typically have to think otherwise. Students who are not in "good standing" with the university - those who have been placed on Disciplinary Probation Level II or Academic Probation Level II - are not given the option to obtain Tufts credit from abroad programs.…

Bittersweet. That is perhaps the only word that can describe this weekend for the women's lacrosse team. On Saturday, the Jumbos earned arguably the biggest win in program history, toppling nationally ranked No. 7 Middlebury, 15-7. With the victory, Tufts not only beat Middlebury for the first time since 1982 but also ended the Panthers' 76-game NESCAC winning streak, one that dated back to the 2000 season.…

Endings are always bittersweet. With summer vacation close enough to taste, today is a day to balance our excitement over finishing the year with our sadness at the prospect of leaving our fellow Jumbos for four months - and for some of us, at the reality of leaving Tufts' comfortable bubble for good.…

This month, the world once again commemorates the 1915 mass killings and deportation of over two million Armenians by the Young Turk regime of the Ottoman Empire. Ninety-three years after the first genocide of the 20th century, the United States and the international community should, at last, compel the leadership of Turkey to seek a real and sustainable solution to the Armenian Genocide issue by ensuring that the country comes to terms with its past, as well as adopts some much-desired changes in its policies toward Armenia.…
