As we receive our diplomas today, we, like many of you, will be reflecting on what these past four years have meant to us. Naturally, a large part of that reflection will be focused on our time spent working on the Daily.
We can’t claim to be representative of the entire Tufts population, but we feel connected to our fellow Jumbos on at least one important level: We’re pretty active outside the classroom. Even as we put our plans and friends aside for a semester to spend countless hours in our basement office, we knew that we were not alone on this campus. High levels of extracurricular activity are the norm at Tufts, and that’s something we’re proud of.
As active members of the community ourselves, we believe that these experiences outside the classroom are ultimately what will define our college experiences and set the members of the Class of 2009 apart from the field as we look ahead to graduate schools, jobs and the future.
The three of us have been a part of this newspaper since our freshman year, as have several others who sit with us today. We have seen the paper change in several ways, many of which you may have noticed and others that were more subtle. We are proud of the strides forward we have made as a print newspaper over the past four years and of the growth of our Web site.
Having a campus on which so many students are active in the community has enriched our content and challenged us to pursue higher standards. We have covered a multitude of controversial issues in our time at Tufts, and while our coverage has not always been universally loved, we are proud that it has sparked discussion. Tufts, like any institution of higher learning, is a marketplace of ideas, and we have been happy to contribute.
We have attempted to foster an avenue for the Tufts community to share its opinions. Our op-ed section, our blogs and the comments posted on our Web site have all helped us carry out this goal, and we think that Tufts is better off for it. For better or for worse, we've gotten you talking.
But we don’t take all the credit. If you have ever involved yourself in any way with the Daily, have ever written an op-ed, given an interview or contributed a photo: Thank you. Our gratitude extends beyond that, though. If you have ever been on a sports team, taken part in Battle of the Bands, performed in a play, been part of a group that brought a speaker to campus, held a fundraiser or voted in a Tufts Community Union Senate election: Thank you. Without you, we would be hard-pressed to fill our pages every day.
We are able to have diverse and compelling articles largely because of all of you. As much fun as slaving away in a windowless basement is, we would have no reason to devote ourselves to this paper if our classmates were not so interesting and involved.
So, to our fellow members of the Class of 2009, congratulations. And thank you for making the past four years worth covering.

Sincerely,
Evans Clinchy
