Renowned historian and beloved professor Gerald Gill passed away on July 26 at the age of 58. Although Tufts' public relations office could not confirm a cause of death, the Boston Globe reported it was arterial sclerosis. Gill, a graduate of Lafayette College and Howard University who had been teaching at Tufts since 1980, was an expert in the areas of African American opposition to wars in the 20th century and race relations in Boston. David Rawson (LA '07) passed away on June 28 in California after an artery ruptured in his chest. He was 22. While at Tufts, Rawson was involved with EPIIC, theater, the chamber singers and - until he resigned to express disapproval of the controversial Christmas carol - The Primary Source. (1) comment
Tufts alum Paul Farris (LA '06) was killed in Somerville on May 27 after a driver fleeing from the police hit a taxi he was riding in with his girlfriend. Farris was 23. An avid music enthusiast, he was the lead singer of the respected indie band theMark, which is comprised of almost entirely of Tufts alumni. (2) comments
Tufts will award approximately 2,437 degrees at today's Commencement ceremony, which will take place in two phases. The first phase will begin at 9 a.m. with the Academic Procession and will last until approximately 11 a.m. During this phase, the main programming will occur on the Academic Quad between Bendetson and Ballou halls. Residents of the Hillside area have been able to breathe easier following the May 4 arrest of 19-year-old Somerville resident Nicolas Chacon, who police officers say committed several of the sexual assaults that plagued the area from the end of March through much of April. (0) comments
The Committee on Student Life (CSL) released a decision on May 10 finding The Primary Source, Tufts' conservative magazine, guilty of harassment and creating a hostile environment. As a consequence of the verdict, the CSL declared that all pieces in the Source must now be attributed to their authors. (4) comments
The Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service released a fresh strategy for active citizenship last month that aims to increase the number of students it reaches. But some students within the college say that important parties were not consulted about the strategy and question whether certain portions of it are appropriate. (0) comments

The Massachusetts legislature is in the process of debating several bills related to curbing bullying in schools, according to state lawmakers and the Associated Press (AP). On May 9, the Joint Committee on Education heard House Bill 412, sponsored by Representative Paul Donato and Senator Jarrett Barrios. (1) comment
Tufts' new Interfaith Center, originally slated to open by the beginning of this semester, is scheduled to be up and running by September. Located at 58 Winthrop Street, it will replace the former Catholic Center and provide a gathering space for all religious faiths. (0) comments
A dozen college presidents are encouraging their peers to boycott the U.S. News and World Report's annual college ranking survey, denouncing a system they view as an arbitrary means of distinguishing between schools. More than 1,900 schools are evaluated each year in the survey. (0) comments
On the heels of the renovations to the kitchen and serving area of Hotung that were completed last month, the rest of the café will be remodeled this summer. The product of collaboration between Tufts Community Union (TCU) senators, Dining Services, the Student Activities office and the Student Affairs office, the new construction plans have the same goal as the recently completed work: making Hotung a better social space. A Tufts Daily poll that was administered to approximately 155 students last month offered some insights into students' sentiments about campus life. Not everybody surveyed answered all the questions, and each percentage comes from those who did respond. (0) comments
Five and a half weeks after Hotung re-opened, it is still unclear whether or not it has been successful as an on-campus social spot. The Tufts Community Union (TCU) Senate allocated a larger sum of money to student groups this fiscal year than it has in any previous year, according to a report issued by TCU Treasurer Evan Dreifuss last month. The Senate's Allocations Board budgeted over a million dollars for the second year in a row as they gave $1,035,000 to 134 different student organizations this year, the State of the Treasury report said. Several months after the target date for their installation, there are still not any Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in the Davis Square shuttles, affectionately called the "Joeys." The Joey GPS project was unveiled last year as a way to give students live online updates about the location and arrival times of the shuttle through a Web site. (3) comments
No more rising sophomores are on the housing waitlist, according to Director of Residential Life and Learning Yolanda King. As of April 27, there were still 125 students left on a list that was originally 180 after the lottory. By May 4, the Office of Residential Life and Learning (ORLL) was able to place all rising sophomores into on-campus housing for next year. (0) comments
