As Parents Weekend approaches, two burning questions arise, namely "Where do I hide all of the empty liquor bottles I've painstakingly saved since the beginning of the semester?" and "What do old people like my parents do for fun?" While Tufts offers no solution to the first quandary, this year's "Avenue of the Arts," the highlight of the 2007 Parents Weekend Program, is sure to provide some cross-generational entertainment. Gian Lorenzo Bernini is perhaps the foremost sculptor of his time, and his monumental bronze and marble statues are the very epitome of early Baroque art. Before he and his workshop could create large statues from expensive materials such as marble, Bernini first created smaller clay models to determine how the final version of his works should look. The story of Jesse James, the notorious outlaw known for robbing trains and banks throughout the Southwest in the late 19th century, has been told countless times through folk songs, dime novels and western movies. The latest release, "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," recounts the gunslinger's final heists and glorious demise. (0) comments
As the most filmed British monarch, Queen Elizabeth I certainly reigns over pop culture despite having been dead for almost 400 years. Whether a minor character in a film or the title role, a scene of Queen Elizabeth I is a force to reckon with on screen, not just visually, with her intricate costumes, but also in her manner, shown to be clever and persistent. This weekend, the beloved, elderly people that birthed us, clothed us and spend around $50,000 a year to send us to Tufts will travel from far and wide to Boston - and ruin their respective children's social lives. For many, college provides students the opportunity not to become highly educated, but to publicly embarrass themselves and disgrace their parents from the privacy of their own dorm room, frat house, academic quad or other suitable TUPD-patrolled area.
