‘Supernatural’ soars into its fifth season

TV Review | 4 out of 5 stars

In 2005, “Supernatural” debuted with a simple pitch: hot guys in a hotter car, cruising around America and fighting demons along the way. The show knew what simple pleasures it offered, and it wielded them wisely. The writing was full of humor, containing somewhat more wit and emotion than the concept demanded. As the series matured, it gradually evolved in mythology and tone, becoming one of the more reliable sources on TV for crackling action and fun, as well as a few genuine frights.

This past Thursday, “Supernatural” returned to The CW for its fifth season (purportedly its last) to find the boys facing their greatest challenge yet -- the honest-to-God Apocalypse (pun intended).

Brothers Sam and Dean Winchester (the serviceable Jared Padalecki and would-be breakout star Jensen Ackles) have been trained as “hunters,” traveling from town to town to take down demons, vampires, ghosts and all manner of creatures that go bump in the night. After losing their father, avenging their mother’s murder and overcoming death once or twice, all Hell finally breaks loose.

After a season’s worth of effort, they’ve failed to stop Lucifer’s destined escape from Hell -- in fact, they may have caused it. Now, a world-ending war is pending and untold casualty is imminent. Only Dean, Sam and the renegade angel Castiel (Misha Collins) have the courage to stand up to Lucifer and the angels of Heaven, both of which would have humanity burn.

It was a bold gamble to bring angels and biblical mythology into a show that had previously gone no further than the thrill of having the Winchesters shoot ghosts with sawed-off shotguns. Until last season, the world of “Supernatural” had worked under the assumption that, while the monsters under the bed are real, God is merely a superstition. Heaven is not as simple as it appears to be, of course, and God has -- in the words of an angel -- “left the building.” However, this episode seems to hint that a greater power is working on Castiel’s side, against the other angels.

Castiel is a compellingly nuanced, unreadable character, played with a great deal of aplomb. The addition of Collins to the small roster of series regulars is undoubtedly a welcome one. Zachariah, Castiel’s former boss, is played by veteran actor Kurt Fuller as frighteningly manipulative with obscured motivations. In the premiere, he breaks Sam’s legs and removes his lungs while giving Dean stomach cancer, all as a negotiation tactic.

And now the show is attempting to tackle the Devil himself. But Lucifer’s release doesn’t result in rampant violence -- at least, not yet. In the premiere, Mark Pellegrino (formerly Jacob on “Lost”) plays Nick, whose family has been senselessly murdered. Lucifer visits him, in the guise of his late wife, to convince Nick that’s he’s really just misunderstood; the fallen angel tenderly implores, “My only sin was loving God too much.” By the end of the hour, Nick consents to being the vessel for Lucifer -- or, in the Winchester vernacular, his “meat suit.” At the same time, Dean begrudgingly discovers that his own destiny is to be the vessel for the Michael, the archangel that last caused Lucifer to fall.

The show’s dialogue continues to amuse. Dean calls the angels “asshats” and then refers to himself as an “angel condom.” In reference to Castiel’s apparent demise, one character memorably describes the explosion as being “like a water balloon full of chunky soup.” The able cast plays fast and loose with the show’s brash language, adding necessary humor to an otherwise grim and sometimes rote narrative.

“Sympathy for the Devil” was not as bombastic as last year’s game-changing premiere or the tense season finale, but it’s not hard to feel optimistic about the coming season based on the seeds planted here. Whether the Lucifer plot will turn cliché remains to be seen.

“Supernatural” isn’t going to compete with critical darlings like “Mad Men” for the title of Best Show on TV, but as far as genre shows go, it’s well thought out and generally well done. The adrenaline and the characters are addictive in the best way. They are, at the heart of it, simple pleasures -- and isn’t that what TV is for?

I think that both actors are outstanding. Imagine having Zack Efron playing one of the roles... It wouldn't be half as good as it is now. It isn't necessary to see the two "Brothers" apart and to say Jensen/Jared is better. The both of them make Supernatural a TV event worth watching.

Sorry if i made mistakes in my Text but i am from Germany and tried to express my opinion as well in my "good for nothing" English.

Great article, but I have to agree about the "serviceable" comment... I dont know what you wanted to say with that, but I think it was a bad choice of words, he deserves more than that. No offence.

I think both Jared och Jensen are great actors. Why so negative? Is it realy a crime to think Padalecki is better than "serviceable"? Calm down! Once again, great article! Its always nice to read good things about the show!

This was a good review. And given ratings we need these. Both actors are outstanding. And together they make this show the delight that it is.

Amen! Both Jared and Jensen are incredible actors and from what I hear and have seen for myself great friends. Also you're right, all Dean and Sam girls alike should be happy with any article that sheds light in our boys and their story without bashing the show. Not to mention the fact that the show itself is about so much more than one brother against the other, Eric Kripke himself has stated that the show is about family and if family can save the world. So quit bashing each other's respective faingirl/guy's heads in and give both the boys some love!

You guys are seriously freaking out over one little word? GET A LIFE! You think Jared cares? No, he absolutely does not. The writer said she meant "capable", nothing bad, so what are you complaining about anyway? It's all a matter of opinion, so if she thinks Jensen is a better actor than Jared, then let her be, you have no right to complain about it and bash her.

You should all be grateful that she bothered to write a review at all, and shed some light on the show. But, of course, as all "rabid" Sam (or Dean) fans do, you flipped out over the tiniest thing and made yourselves look like complete idiots, in turn also making the SPN fandom look stupid. Well done!

I also have to say that, though Sam fans, or Jared fans are supposed to be the horrible, bashing, rabid insane ones, who do you see making cutting remarks about other fans here? At first glance at least, it seems to be almost exclusively from people who then turn around and support Dean and/or Jensen.

"'serviceable'.....'serviceable'........, are u frickin kiddin me. thats all im going to say on the matter "

Please be polite. This author is just as entitled to her opinion as anyone else and you'd do well to remember that. The show needs publicity which it has long-deserved and is now getting, but NOT bad publicity and these type of comments are not good for the show.

Thanks for the review Rebecca, I'm glad you're enjoying the show and I hope you'll convert others to it as well.

First off, the whole 'rabid Samgirls' comments are more than likely coming from 'rabid Jensengirls' so that pretty much makes the point moot. Secondly, some people actually find that Jared's acting has become excellent and don't really find Jensen's all that tremendous sometimes. It is purely subjective and a matter of taste, so 'bashing' either or complaining because some people DO indeed enjoy watching Jared and in fact watch the show because of Jared, is just as bad as if we said the same about Jensen. Some of us didn't agree with the reviewer's assessment (her opinion of course) and expressed our opinions in return. They are equally valid, providing they don't attack the poster, like the posters here who are dissing the Sam/Jared fans by calling them rabid. No, some of us are just expressing our different opinion - so please don't dump your judgement on us, because you wouldn't appreciate it in turn.

The real fans of this show, the one who get the point of the show is love of family would be upset if either brother was referred to as serviceable.

Please, this isn't a case of Sam girls going rabid, this is a case of genuine annoyance. I love both the guys and Jared deserves much, MUCH, more than 'serviceable'.

Rebecca, I'm sorry but the word serviceable comes across as meaning adequate, no matter what you intended, and that paints a picture which just doesn't ring true. Jared keeps on getting better and better as an actor and 'When The Leavee Breaks' was a stand out performance.

I love that you've given some attention to an underappreciated show like 'Supernatural' but it's a real shame you've not put more thought into your choice of words.

Love how Supernatural is finally getting the recognition it deserves, and love that we are getting talked about in a lot of articles, it's just the tip of the iceberg \o/ I hope there will be more to come. Rebecca, I enjoyed reading your article, the introduction to how the show started out and how it morphed into something beyond what TV is showing us nowadays was really well written.

However, the part of the article that had me a little upset and I will admit rather sad and disheartened was - the 'serviceable' Jared Padalecki. Now, you said you meant the word to mean 'capable', and it's true that he is capable of carrying the role of Sam Winchester, just as Jensen is capable of carrying the role of Dean Winchester (but I'm not going to talk about Jensen right now, it's Jared I'm focusing on :). To me the word 'capable' is mundane, when describing the talent that Jared brings to the show (and no I don't want all Dean girls or other fan girls to bow down to the talent that is Jared Padalecki :/ I just believe he is more than 'capable' and that a better adj. would have done him more justice). I will admit that Jared has grown, from the young adorable actor from season 1 to the handsome talented man in season 4 and what we've seen in season 5, so far. So I guess to me the word 'serviceable', however you may have meant it, doesn't do Jared Padalecki justice.

Also, 'would-be breakout star Jensen Ackles', he IS a break out star and I see him getting many more roles in the future. Jensen by far is the most talented man of his age group, on TV (I'm not comparing Jared and Jensen here, just so you know, right now I'm talking about Jensen only), he deserves the roles that come to him in the future, and if he doesn't get them, then there is something seriously wrong with the entertainment industry, I mean there already is, but you know what I mean.

Overall, great article about the show. I just love my boys way too much, and I just get really upset when they don't get the accolades they deserve. It's just me and how I feel about them :) Your choice of words for Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles kind of ruined it for me, but just a little bit, not so much to warrant a halt of publicizing the show and the boys :) I really do hope we see more articles about our show and about our boys.

As for those of you who think it's okay to come on and start with 'oh no the sam girls this', and 'the rabid sam girls that' or who think downright bashing the person who wrote this article is cool, let me tell you something IT'S NOT COOL! Everyone has a right to their opinions and everyone has a right to voice their concerns. I didn't agree with Rebbeca's choice of word for describing Jared as I have mentioned above, but this is her article and she did a wonderful job advertising the return of the show. So bashing her is not fair. Furthermore, bashing the Sam girls and making it sound like they have no right to their opinions, and that whenever they do voice their opinions it's automatic 'OH MY THEY ARE BASHING DEAN/JENSEN', to the point where YOU are actually bashing 'SAM/JARED' is not cool and in my opinion it's LAME!

I really enjoyed the article and so appreciate the time and effort for Supernatural. I really agreed with your insights about dialogue and the show's ability to make light of itself and the dark topics it delves into. The episodes aren't always even, but I do have a great hope for this coming season.

Thanks so much for an excellent review of my favourite show!
I agree wholeheartedly that Ackles is a break-out star, and feel that until last season he was very under-utilised. Now, with him being in the spotlight and having someone like Misha Collins to test his strengths against, I'm looking foreward to the best season ever!!
