Senate Meeting

Dilys Ong / Tufts Daily

Tufts Community Union senators approved $230,000 in funding last night for a supplemental building to be constructed at the Loj in New Hampshire.

The Tufts Community Union (TCU) Senate approved $230,000 in funding last night to go toward a Trips Cabin to be constructed alongside the Tufts Mountain Club’s (TMC) Loj in North Woodstock, N.H.
The body voted 20-5 in favor of allocating money from the TCU recovered funds to the project, which will involve building a small structure that will sleep around 30 people who desire quieter nighttime accommodations at the Tufts-owned, TMC-operated Loj property.
The cost for the cabin could hit a maximum of $237,500, and TMC has already raised $11,854 for the project from members and alumni. At minimum, it may cost around $200,000; TMC plans to repay the Senate any unused funds if the project ends up below the current budget.
“We’ve been trying so long to get this, and it was amazing to see all our time and effort come to fruition,” TMC President Katie Bond, a junior, told the Daily last night.
The disbursement of the funds includes a stipulation that TMC lower its prices for the weekend retreat center, which is open to all undergraduate Tufts students and groups but which is discounted for TMC members. As a result, certain costs for individuals, groups and TMC members will drop by $5.
“We want to keep our prices down, we want more people to come up, and Senate wanted that as well,” Bond said.
The debate at yesterday’s meeting centered on the merits of funding such a large expenditure — the costliest of this academic year — when the extent to which the student body at large would benefit from an off-campus structure located a two-hour drive from campus remained unclear.
But TMC plans to launch a publicity campaign centered around the Loj in the fall. Last night, members of the group’s executive board also pledged to make rides to the property much more accessible.
“Right now, it’s kind of a free-for-all getting up to the Loj,” TMC Vice President Brian Gilling, a sophomore who is also the director of the Trips Cabin project, told the Daily. “[Members of the Senate] want us to make a procedure for everyone to get up and enjoy it.”
The Trips Cabin has been two years in the making as a way to expand the Loj and open it up to more undergraduates.
Last fall, TMC members launched a campaign supporting spending part of the recovered funds on the project. The project came before the Senate then, but was shelved when the administration indicated that it would loan money to the Senate to fund the expansion on the Loj property.
But the economic downturn dashed those plans, and the Senate did not take up the issue of the Trips Cabin again before reaching a decision on the disbursement of the recovered funds. In December, the body voted to use $300,000 of the recovered funds to create an endowment that would support student activities, channel $87,780 to student groups through the Allocations Board and put $300,000 into a savings account. It was the latter funds on which last night’s allocation focused.
Senator Dan Pasternack, a sophomore, spearheaded the effort to bring the Trips Cabin project before the Senate again. He said that the issue deserved to be brought before the Senate when the body had a significant amount of money that could be disbursed.
“I figured it was something that was important to TMC and, more importantly, was important to the Tufts community, and that several people on Senate stated that as one of their objectives for this year,” he told the Daily after last night’s meeting. “I figured it would only be right for it to at least be heard in Senate.”
Senator Chas Morrison, a sophomore, voted against last night’s project. While he supports the Trips Cabin, he said that the Senate should have waited for the administration to help out with the project — something he said administrators had indicated they might do.
“In my mind, the debate was whether building the Trips Cabin now as opposed to in the near future was worth not [being] able to put this money toward expenditures such as increased wireless or renovations to the campus center,” he told the Daily after the vote.
Gilling said ground can be broken as soon as the earth at the property thaws enough. The cabin could be completed as early as one and a half months from now, and at latest by the start of the fall semester.

People need to stop assuming that the Loj only serves those who are hardcore mountainy-people. As someone who enjoys an occasional retreat to go apple-picking and microbrew-tasting, I can say that the Loj offers something for everyone. Here is a sampling:
-Apple-picking
-Microbrew-tasting (some of the best in New England - try the Woodstock Inn's "Pig's Ear!")
-Skiing
-Hiking
-Wale's Tale water park (woo hoo!)
-Gorgeous scenery viewing
-A quiet get-a-way
-Snow shoeing
-Canoeing
-Skinny Dipping (although I hear that the local cops appreciate it if you keep your clothes on)
-Great company
-No sales tax in NH!
-Cheap booze (seriously, if you haven't checked out NH liquor stores, you need to)
-Small town experience (opposed to Medford/Somerville)
-And of course if you are interested, there is always someone willing to take you: rock climbing, mountain climbing, ice climbing, winter camping, summer camping, etc...etc...)

Tufts would be a much lesser place without the Loj. Recently, the Loj has been so overcrowded that it has been really hard to enjoy the Loj like you used to. This additional building will allow a space for everyone in the student body to take advantage of NH. Even though I am not a crazy TMCer, I understand and agree with the logic behind it.

For the people that continue to use wireless and the gym as arguments against the Trips Cabin:

1. Wireless is TOO expensive, costing way more than $230,000. It is a project Senate has been working on for years and the administration has told informed Senators time and again it can not afford to just "make the campus wireless." It is a project that has to be phased in over time, which IS happening anyways.

2. The Gym: The school has instituted a building freeze and stopped funding for projects not already under way. Cousens is currently being redone but to revamp the gym would cost millions upon million of dollars. Senate wouldn't be able to redo the gym even if it allocated all the recovered funds to that one project. Anyways, there is already money allocated to redo the gym once the building freeze is over.

3. The administration told Senate flat out that it would not help in any way with the Trips Cabin; TMC could not go to the administration for any sort of financial support. This was the most viable project with the amount of money Senate had.

I have been monitoring these comments throughout the day, and there seems to be quite an outpouring of opinions. To those of you who have expressed your support, thank you! To those of you who feel frustrated and disappointed by the Senate's decision, I am sorry that you feel wronged. Please read my Letter to the Editor in tomorrow's Daily. I have tried to address some of the concerns vocalized in this forum. To those of you who have anonymously submitted irate and transparently political posts, I am sorry to see that you didn't feel comfortable attaching your name to your sentiments.
Thank you again to the TCU Senate for voting to support the Trips Cabin!

The funds cannot come close to paying for a new gym. The only place that $200,000 can pay for a whole building is in the woods in NH. What a unique and wonderful asset for a university to have! This is great bang-for-the-buck and a wise investment. Way to go Senate!

"If you seriously know the facts and can think of a Tufts facility that is more over-utilized and more in need of expansion, please let me know..."

The gym? And hey, why not expand the wireless coverage, too? Those could benefit so many more students!

The crowd at the Loj has been an issue since I was a freshman in 2003, but not like it is now, from what I can tell. The growth of TMC and the interest in the Loj is to be praised, and adequate resources should be put towards groups that demonstrate popularity among the student body. That said, this seems like an extreme amount of money for a student body to be putting up to benefit of those who choose to express their fun out of the city and in the country.

My biggest worry going forward is the gentrification of what we TMCers held so dear. The Loj is a special place to 'get away', not to party hard or be around hundreds of people (wilderness excepted). Those in charge of TMC right now should be weary of letting the place get overrun. What is an escape, if everyone is there? If you can manage that, I think the project is a great idea.

As a recent alum, I'm disappointed in this decision of the Senate.

Of all the worthy causes out there, adding to Tufts diminishing financial aid, giving money to student groups across the board, or creating a giving program in concert with the Tufts Fund, this seems a particularly inopportune time to make a capital investment that benefits students disproportionately.

The money was stolen from all the TCU. It should benefit the entire TCU. It seems peculiar to me that the money would go to one group's project, despite the fact that it is "open to all student groups." TMC disproportionately benefits from this money, as they are the group by far that utilizes the Loj the most. These facts seem plain to me.

Thank you so much, Senate, for funding the cabin. People don't realize it now, but having a second building on the Loj property will make the Loj a much, MUCH better place for everyone who goes to the Loj (apprx. 1500 students per semester). It will allow so many more people and activities to come to the Loj. Rarely these days can $200,000 impact so many people for such a long time. 50 years from now, people will still be enjoying the widespread benefits of a bigger and more welcoming "Loj experience". Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Is there a way to find out which senators voted yes and which voted no on this? If so, it will definitely affect my votes for next year's senate.

Before passing judgment on the Senate for their decision, please make sure you know the facts surrounding the Loj. Every weekend this winter, the Loj hosted dozens and dozens of Tufts students, alumni, and friends, including 1-2 non-TMC student groups and/or sports teams each weekend. For its size, it is one of the most over-utilized Tufts facilities, not to mention that it is the home base of Tufts' largest club (TMC).

Building the Trips Cabin is not just adding to the Loj property for giggles. The Loj's already immense popularity is growing each year, and the building is becoming overcrowded because of it. The Trips Cabin is expansion to a facility that is very overcrowded and desperately needs more space - a direct response to a need of the Tufts community.

If you seriously know the facts and can think of a Tufts facility that is more over-utilized and more in need of expansion, please let me know...

While I voted against this proposal, I don't think it's appropriate to call out individual senators here. I trust everyone made their decision in good faith.

The Senate is a very important and legitimate organization and its wishes should be respected. Senators are far more knowledgeable about Tufts, and life in general, and we are all lucky that they are taking time from their busy lives to make such decisions. If they had decided to create salaries for themselves it would be appropriate.

As a Senator who voted against the proposal I'd like to voice my disapproval with this decision. To give such a huge amount of money to one student group is ridiculous. And yes, the Senate has been going to the Loj for free EVERY year for retreat. This decision is selfish and irresponsible. The conduct of Senator Levine was especially disappointing. Her antics were immature and she should be ashamed of her political posturing. Whoever she supports for TCU President I will certainly vote against.

What a joke. The Senate is so stupid. Why don't they give every student group (you know, the people the money was stolen from in the first place) an opportunity a little extra money to spend as they please. It would not be difficult to prorate the money for each group. Let a culture club host a more extravagant show, let a publication produce an extra issue, etc.

a couple things to keep in mind. I was a senator who was heavily against building the extension of the trips cabin when the first proposal came in mind. In leadership and governance you either 1.) go with what will please all the students or 2.) do what you think can help the student body in the long run with the expectation that people will understand when they've gone up to the cabin and used it for retreats and a getaway. In the end, I voted for this project because we added conditions that made it easier and more affordable for students (the other 75%) that have never been the Loj.

If you notice there are a couple things that the Senate did to increase diversity with student groups going up to the loj. Expanding capacity lets the groups that currently are on the waiting list to go up to the Loj, and lets newer groups go up there as well.

I personally see this agreement as an opportunity for the student body. We reduced costs for students and student groups to go up to the Loj across the board by $5 and added an additional discount incentive for new groups to go up to the Loj. Also, we're in the process of encouraging additional demand with better publicity, ease of payment and methods of getting up to the Loj.

As many have stated, the Loj does not represent just 5% of the student body, because it is booked like every weekend for different clubs to have retreats and for TWO. I think this is an entirely reasonable decision and I have never been involved in TMC. The Loj is a great way to get kids out of the city and provide safe entertainment and relaxation away from Frats on weekends. I think a lot of kids could be a lot happier if they got out into the woods(at least the fells for goodness sake) every once in awhile...
