On behalf the Read by the River executive board, I'd like to thank the Tufts organizations and student volunteers that made last Sunday's event a huge success.
Around 500 kids from the Medford schools came to the fourth annual literacy carnival. Participation from the town of Medford included the presence of police officers, firefighters, librarians, and Mayor Michael McGlynn. The kids were thrilled to hear from Super Bowl winner and Pro-Bowler Patriot Larry Izzo. The Amalgamates put on a fantastic performance that had kids and volunteers alike on their feet and dancing.
The kids received movie tickets in exchange for book reports that they had completed. They also took home free books, prizes, a kid's version of the Daily, and hopefully, an increased appreciation for reading.
Read by the River represents the ideal in cooperation between Tufts and the Medford community. The hundreds of parents who attended were enormously appreciative to have Tufts students acting as role models for their kids, and they undoubtedly left with an improved opinion of Tufts' role in their community.
I encourage even more student groups and individuals to participate next year, as Read by the River will surely continue to grow and improve as it has in the past four years.
