Distance Medley Relay, men's track & field
The Distance Medley Relay team of senior Brian McNamara and juniors Trevor Williams, Matt Fortin and Patrick Mahoney (right, clockwise from top left) set a new school record of 10:07.02, finishing sixth on Friday night at the Boston University Invitational.
Stepping in against strong Div. I programs like Duke, Syracuse, and Boston College, Brian McNamara pounded the 1200-meter leg,handing off to Williams in a 3:05 high. Williams hammered the first lap of the 400 leg in 23 seconds, fading a bit on the second lap for a 50 mid. Mahoney then took the baton and hit 1:55 high in the 800 leg. With a bid in the Div. III National Meet in the DMR hanging in the balance, Fortin ran a strong mile, kicking in the final 400 meters in 61 seconds.
The Jumbos hit the Provisional Qualifying Time of 10:13.30 and will look to beat the Automatic Qualifying Time of 10:01 when they run again at the St. Valentine Invitational at Boston University on Feb. 12.
Allison Love, Women's basketball
<$> Senior co-captain Allison Love helped lead the women's basketball team to a much-needed and long-overdue win Saturday at home against Connecticut College, 84-49.
Mired in a seven-game losing streak and still seeking its first NESCAC win of the season, Tufts came out firing against the Camels. Love led the charge, scoring 16 points, including 11 in the first half, to go along with eight rebounds - tied with sophomore Laura Jasinski for tops on the team.
The forward also notched 12 points and seven rebounds in Friday night's home loss to Wesleyan in what proved to be the final game of the Jumbos' losing streak. Love is averaging 11.2 points per game this winter, the third-highest total on the team, as well as 5.6 assists. She is one of just three Jumbo women to start all 17 games of the 2004-05 season, teaming with junior Jessica Powers and fellow senior co-captain Erin Connolly to form a formidible punch on court.
