Busta Rhymes to headline Spring Fling

Rapper Busta Rhymes will headline Spring Fling on April 30, replacing reggae artist Wyclef Jean.

Concert Board and Rhymes formalized their agreement on Tuesday night.

Jean was forced to cancel after he learned that Spring Fling was on the same day as his mother's wedding.

After hearing the news, Concert Board went back to the drawing board. "The first step was seeing who was available," Concert Board Co-Chair junior Alice Chiou said. "Our agent threw out names to us."

Co-Chair Sheena Harris said the group went through "dozens" of artists before deciding on Rhymes.

"Out of all the artists thrown out to us, we thought he was the best," Chiou said. Rhymes was also charging a price in line within Concert Board's budget.

Rhymes was originally slated to headline the 2003 Spring Fling two years ago, but the event was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Harris said the return of Rhymes to the Spring Fling billing was just a coincidence. "He happened to be the pick of the litter," she said.

A rap and hip-hop music veteran, Rhymes formed the band Leaders of the New School in 1990, releasing two albums. His Top 10 solo single, "Woo-Hah!! Got You All in Check," was released in 1996 and catapulted the album into gold record territory.

Ska band Goldfinger and indie group The Walkmen will also perform at the event, along with student band The Juice - winner of this year's Battle of the Bands contest.

Spring Fling will take place on the President's lawn, and tickets - free for undergraduates - may be picked up from Monday, April 25 to Friday, April 29, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the campus center lobby. Tickets for guests, alumni and graduate students are $20 each.
