Wyclef drops from Spring Fling lineup

Hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean, who was originally announced as headliner of this year's Spring Fling, will no longer perform at the concert.

The Concert Board, which organizes and runs Spring Fling, is in the process of finding a replacement. "I don't think the school would be happy with only two openers and no headliner," said junior Alice Chiou, co-chair of Concert Board.

Due to Wyclef's cancellation, the Concert Board is able to spend money to find a new artist to fill the lineup.

"We're not going to leave our Spring Fling open without any headliner," Chiou said. "We are leaving it a point to get a headliner."

Chiou was unable to comment on the artists with whom the Programming Board is currently in discussion.

"We have some options open, which is very fortunate," she said. "We're looking for a hip-hop artist to diversify [the concert bill]. We've been in contact with our agent- we've been researching a set of artists."

According to Chiou, Wyclef cancelled his agreement with the Concert Board to perform because his mother's wedding is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, the day of Spring Fling.

"There was a lot of miscommunication between Wyclef's agent, Wyclef's manager, and Wyclef," Chiou said. "It was miscommunication on their side."

According to Chiou, Tufts pays for all performers of Spring Fling except for the student band, which opens the concert and is decided during the annual Battle of the Bands competition.

The winner of Saturday's Battle of the Bands was The Juice.
