Hoyt named NESCAC Coach of the Year

In his first full season at the helm of the men's swimming and diving team, coach Adam Hoyt was named by his peers as the NESCAC Coach of the Year.

A former assistant at Trinity, Hoyt came to Tufts as an interim coach before the 2004-05 season. This year, Hoyt led the team to a 9-1 dual meet record and runner-up finish at the NESCAC Championships, where Tufts broke nine school records and qualified several swimmers for Nationals.

Martin is First-Team All-NESCAC, Powers Second-Team for women

On the court, the All-NESCAC basketball teams were announced. Headlining for the Jumbos as a First-Team All-NESCAC selection is senior tri-captain Dan Martin. A two-time NESCAC Player of the Week, Martin leads the Jumbos in both points (17.6) and rebounds (6.9) and has been a focal point for much of the Jumbos' inside game.

For the women, senior tri-captain Jessica Powers was named to the All-NESCAC Second Team. The former NESCAC Rookie of the Year scored her 1,000th point this season. Powers led the Jumbos in scoring with 11.6 ppg. See tomorrow's Daily for full coverage of these stories.

Field hockey team upholds title of student-athletes

Thanks to a team GPA over 3.0, the Tufts field hockey team was recently given the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's National Team Academic Award.

"I'm just really proud and impressed at how they're able to balance being a full-time athlete and a full-time student," coach Tina McDavitt said. "They've got a lot on their plate, and it's amazing to me how many of them can do so well. I'm really encouraging everyone on the team to get above a 3.0 every semester, and I know that's easier said than done."

Twelve Jumbos were individually selected to the NFHCA National Academic Squad. They were seniors Therese Corsello, Erika Goodwin, and Lea Napolitano; juniors Marilyn Duffy-Cabana, Kathleen Martin, and Stacey Watkins; sophomores Ileana Casellas-Katz and Jennie Williamson; and freshmen Brittany Holiday, Tess Jasinski, Lauren Stahl, and Dana Svendsen. The criteria for selection to the squad was having a GPA of 3.30 or higher in the fall 2005 semester.

This was not the first NFHCA honor for Napolitano and Watkins this season, as each was named to the Association's All-Region team, in addition to receiving All-NESCAC Second Team honors. In its second season under McDavitt, the team finished its season 8-7 overall, in fifth place in the NESCAC with a 5-4 conference record.
