On Mar. 7, Larry Johnson, Visiting Professor of International Law at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, was appointed United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He will assume the position on May 1.
Johnson served as Chef de Cabinet for the Office of the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia from 2003 to 2005, Legal Counsel of the International Atomic Energy Agency from 1997 to 2001, and Principal Legal Officer at the U.N. Office of the Legal Counsel 1987 to 1997.
He attended Harvard Law School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government. He joined the U.N. Secretariat in 1971.
He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Society of International Law and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and is a professor of global affairs at New York University's Center for Global Affairs.
