This evening, the Dance Lab of the Jackson Gym will be transformed by the Tufts Dance Spring Concert, a unique student-faculty studio concert presented by the Department of Drama and Dance. Faculty members Daniel McCusker and Alice Trexler will contribute work, as will graduating senior Shannon Crudup.
McCusker choreographed an original piece for Melody Ruffin Ward, herself a choreographer (as well as a dancer and teacher) who hails from Providence, RI, to perform Saturday afternoon. The Spring Concert will also feature another McCusker original: a piece that McCusker recently created for his special troupe, the Daniel McCusker Dance Project.
In 2002, the Boston Globe described his handiwork as "rife with contradictions: They're at once angular and curvaceous, abstract and poignantly human, meticulously geometric and free of restraints."
For Crudup's senior project, she has choreographed a trio based on images of her work in dance classes. "The project is based on a series of pictures and drawings and manipulated into many phrases," said Crudup.
The passages of material have become part of a piece that explores the process of development. "There are two songs, both of mainstream nature: one song with a more indie feel, and there is a section in silence."
The show begins at 5:00 p.m., and although admission is free, tickets are required and can be obtained by calling the Dance Office at 617-627-2556.
