Sophomore Mose Berkowitz and senior Kelley Ferro resigned from the Tufts Community Union (TCU) Senate at its meeting last night.
Both students are deeply involved with other organizations on and off campus. Ferro is the editor of the Tufts Traveler, a magazine with travel writing from Tufts students.
Berkowitz cited many different commitments that prevented him from dedicating what he considers sufficient time to the Senate. Included in these are a scholarship with the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service and a job at Newbury Comics, a music store chain in Massachusetts.
"It's a huge honor to be part of the [scholarship] program," he said. He will be working in a community service program to educate 4th grade students about disabilities.
"There are a lot of misconceptions about disabilities and this way, they can learn about them, feel comfortable about them and accept and embrace them," he explained.
Senate Historian Neil Dibiase said that "the Senate is definitely disappointed that they resigned."
"If [Mose] wasn't going to commit himself, I'm glad he recognized it early so we can get someone who can fully commit themselves to the body," he said. "It's the responsible thing to do."
He echoed the same sentiments in Ferro's case, and added that Berkowitz, Ferro, and all non-Senate students could help on Senate projects without officially being elected to the body.
Ferro could not be reached for comment at press time.
