Tufts University resides in the homeland of the Massachusett people and within the territories of the Nipmuc and Wôpanâak (Wampanoag) tribes. They were the original stewards of the land and the relationships between Indigenous peoples, and their traditional territories endure. The university would not exist if it was not for their care.

Following a 7 a.m. practice, nothing sounds better than a fat stack of pancakes. Luckily, Uncommon Grounds (which is on the way back from Tufts’ indoor practice tennis courts) in Watertownoffers a fun selection of pancakes, waffles and french toast on their menu. I mean, what’s not to love about a menu packed with options like coconut stuffed french toast, cinnamon bun french toast and lemon ricotta pancakes? What made this even better was the fact that the menu offersgluten-free substitutesfor all of these options; my gluten-free friend could actually enjoy something other than Dewick’s gluten-free french toast! Of course, Uncommon Grounds has other breakfast classics like avocado toast, eggs benedict and breakfast burritos.

Last year, as a first-year, Mr. Crêpewas my favorite restaurant. Ever. I could walk in at any time of the day and not feel bad about eating a crepe filled with Nutella and whipped cream; whether it was 8 a.m. or 8 p.m., a dessert crepe was always socially acceptable. After over a year of popping into Mr. Crêpe during almost every trip to Davis Square, I can now say that I am pretty experienced with making what to order a tough choice.

Finding a time to coerce my friends into eating breakfast with me is already tough, but what makes it even harder is finding a place that has gluten-free and vegetarian options! Generally, my gluten-free friend is left settling for a yogurt parfait — or just a coffee — when we go out for breakfast. Luckily, we realized that Revival Cafe + Kitchen, that small cafe with a mural that we always pass as we drive through Davis Square, has a menu full of fun breakfast sandwiches, gluten-free options and coffee. While Revival does serve yogurt parfaits, its gluten-free menu extends to oat toast with almond butter, banana and honey, overnight oats, zucchini cardamom muffins, almond flour cake and even a kimchi bowl! Along with its gluten-free menu, Revival offers a variety of other breakfast sandwiches, pastries and coffees.

Everyone talks about Carmichael Dining Center’s breakfasts (which are great, I mean … they have fresh berries every morning). However, Dewick-MacPhie Dining Center doesn’t get enough credit for its breakfasts.

Many student organizations have pushed to further acknowledge systemic racism and engage in anti-racist efforts after the Black Lives Matter movement sparked widespread outcry for racial justice last summer. One such organization at Tufts pushing for anti-racist practices isAthletes of Color. The club's co-president, junior Chi-Chi Ikpeazu, explained its mission.

Last semester, in an effort to have the coolest door in Harleston Hall, my roommate and I hung a sign on our door that read, “Brunch Recommendations (please add your recz).” Surprisingly, the list became quite popular and it filled up quickly with local restaurants like Danish Pastry House, Bagelsaurus and — ironically — The Pub. However, among the long list of cafes, bagel shops and pubs, one restaurant caught our eye:Cafe Luna. Neither my roommate nor I had ever heard of Cafe Luna, and we knew we had to try it.

Providing a laid-back study environment, warm and welcoming service and of course, tasty food to enjoy with friends, Danish Pastry House on Boston Avenue has become a staple of the Tufts experience. Yet, after experiencing a kitchen fire in January 2020 and then observing the enforcement of COVID-19 regulations in the following months, DPH has had a difficult year.

With 61,500 Instagram followers (@blackbirddoughnuts), Blackbird Doughnuts is something everyone must try at least once while in the Boston area. Blackbird has multiple locations throughout Boston, including one in Harvard Square. So, if you’re looking for an excuse to leave campus (in a socially distanced way, of course), go grab a doughnut from Blackbird! A quick glance at the shop’s Instagram highlights tons of fun doughnuts. In addition to the classic doughnuts that it offers year-round, its March menu includes flavors such asmint chocolate chip, tiramisu and Irish soda bread, among others. Seriously, these doughnuts put Dunkin’s to shame.

What do I miss the most about pre-COVID-19 campus life? Easy: Sundae Sunday. First-years cannot understand the pain I have every Sunday night when I leave Dewick-MacPhie Dining Center without a fat bowl of ice cream. So once I found out about the Scoop N Scootery, which delivers massive ice cream sundaes to your door until 2 a.m., I was immediately a fan.

It was 2019, my first year at Tufts. I was grabbing coffee with my soon-to-be best friend when we luckily made the decision to venture away from Dunkin’s watered-down coffee (hot take, I know) and walk into Danish Pastry House. Needless to say, since that day, I’ve been loyal to DPH.

It’s a gray, rainy Saturday morning and yet, just an hour ago, I found myself standing in an out-the-door line waiting for an egg and cheese on an asiago bagel. This wasn’t just any bagel sandwich — it was a Davis Square Donuts & Bagels bagel sandwich.

Part of the first-year experience is the premium meal plan. Despite costing an arm and a leg, a premium plan gives first-years the luxury of swiping into a dining hall, guilt-free. (I remember entering Carmichael Dining Center last year to grab a single chocolate chip cookie on many occasions.)

Sunday mornings are for bagels. That’s why, a couple of Sundays ago, I found myself biking through the pouring rain to Porter Square. I was on my way to pick up an egg and cheese on an everything bagel from Bagelsaurus, and I can attest: It was well worth it. If you won't take my word for it, take Guy Fieri’s; the man himself visited Bagelsaurus on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” (2006–).
