Men’s basketball traveled to New York University for the opening rounds of the NCAA Division III Tournament and notched two big wins in the Big Apple. The postseason environment did not disappoint. Lead changes, lockdown defense, clutch 3-pointers and nail-biter victories secured the Jumbos a spot in the Sweet Sixteen.

Men’s basketball came up short in a back-and-forth battle against the Trinity College Bantams in the semifinal game of the NESCAC tournament, but the team’s strong offensive performance is building momentum as NCAA tournament play approaches. Tufts entered the contest as the No. 4 seed in the conference, primed to face off against the No. 2 seed Trinity in a rematch of Tufts’ competitive Senior Day game that ended in a close loss. Although the Tufts defense managed to limit Trinity’s leading scorer — forward/center Ben Callahan-Gold — to only 4 points, a late 12–2 run by the Bantams sent them to the conference championship.

The men’s basketball team braved the cold for a pair of conference matchups against the Colby College Mules and Bowdoin College Polar Bears last weekend. They fell by a single bucket to the Mules, but the next day they then iced out the Polar Bears to end the trip with a win. Tufts led 33–29 at the half against Colby on Friday behind sophomore forward Scott Gyimesi’s 8 points and two rebounds, setting the pace for what would become his 14th double-double of the season. Three consecutive 3-pointers by the Mules in the final minutes of the opening stanza brought the deficit to single digits. In the second half, the Mules burst onto the court with renewed momentum, taking an early lead. Tufts responded well as Gyimesi continued his clutch performance by executing on a 3-pointer, but the lead changed hands throughout the remainder of the contest, and Colby ultimately won out in the closing seconds.

Men’s basketball returned to Cousens Gymnasium in triumphant fashion on Saturday, notching a commanding win in their third consecutive conference matchup. Coming off of a disappointing road stint that saw two losses in the opening games of NESCAC play, the Tufts Jumbos burst onto their home court reinvigorated and proceeded to flatten the Bates Bobcats in front of a robust crowd of spectators. Though Bates jumped out to an early 12–7 lead, Tufts responded with an 11–0 run following a timeout and retained momentum for the remainder of the contest. Enthusiastic fans, timely 3-pointers and a behemoth second-half dunk from sophomore center Josh Bernstein punctuated the victory, giving the Jumbos a well-earned ego boost ahead of a pair of important weekend games.

Tufts field hockey burst onto Ounjian Field in commanding fashion on Nov. 8 following disappointment in the NESCAC tournament. Tufts opened NCAA play with a 5–0 victory over Southern Maine. After a tough overtime loss to the Mammoths in the first round of the conference tournament, gratitude for the chance to continue their season inspired the Jumbos’ dominant response.

Following their first loss of the season to the No. 2 ranked, Babson, Tufts field hockey rebounded with a 2–0 victory over Colby on Saturday, completing a quest for revenge sparked in the fall of 2022. In last October’s matchup against the Colby Mules, the Jumbos lost 2–1 on home turf at Ounjian Field, so they entered this past weekend’s contest hoping to set the record straight and remain undefeated in NESCAC play. The anticipation continued to build throughout the course of the scoreless first half. Neither team earned a penalty corner or even took a shot for the entire opening quarter, and while Tufts increased the excitement with six penalty corners in the second quarter, Colby blocked three shots at the end of the half to maintain the 0–0 stalemate.

Field hockey battled under Friday night lights in a display of gritty defense and overtime heroics as Tufts edged out Amherst 2–1 for their fourth straight victory. The game was largely a war of attrition, with zeroes lighting up the scoreboard for three quarters. Amherst broke through first when junior forward Sam Maynard scored in the 52nd minute to put the Mammoths ahead 1–0. The clock was winding down, along with the Jumbos’ hope to preserve their undefeated record, until sophomore forward Hannah Biccard and junior forward Kylie Rosenquest connected on a penalty corner. Biccard swiftly handled a rebound off of a shot by senior midfielder and co-captain Andrea DelGiudice and redirected to Rosenquest who buried it to tie the game.

In the opening weekend of NCAA Tournament play, the Jumbos established themselves as a force to be reckoned with on the national stage through dominant performances on their home court. Fresh off of a NESCAC Championship, Tufts continued its momentum against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and secured a commanding 72–57 victory to kick off its postseason campaign. A huge 11–0 run in the second quarter gave the Jumbos a comfortable lead that they would never relinquish, and contributions from throughout the roster displayed the wealth of talent that resides in Cousens Gymnasium.

Junior forward Maggie Russell cemented herself as one of the all-time greats of Tufts women’s basketball, scoring 40 points in the team’s 75–61 victory over Bowdoin in the first round of NESCAC tournament play. The Jumbos faced off against the Polar Bears in Cousens Gymnasium for their second matchup of the year, and after a tight first half, the Tufts offense stepped on the gas pedal and never let up. Russell’s 40-piece topped her previous career high of 33 points, which she set against Bates earlier this season, and she now stands in second place in school history for most points in a single game, a record set by Ellie Strobel’s 44 points in 1994.

Cousens Gymnasium was electric on the afternoon of Jan. 21 as the women’s basketball team defeated conference opponent Bates College in overtime 84–75 after 11 instances of a tie score and 11 lead changes throughout the contest.

In a thrilling matchup on Friday, the Jumbos rallied for a 60–57 road victory against Worcester Polytechnic Institute, showcasing the team’s grit and perseverance. After a strong first quarter for Tufts led by sophomore guard Annika Decker’s eight points, the Engineers responded and took a five-point lead going into halftime. The Jumbos had a slow start in the second half, trailing by as many as 16 points, but junior forward Maggie Russell spearheaded the momentum shift, scoring 21 points in the last two quarters. A foul against Russell with less than a minute remaining gave her two free throw shots, which she made to bring Tufts' lead to three. Time and lockdown defense worked against WPI at the end of the contest, as none of the Engineers’ three final three-point opportunities were successful, and the Jumbos returned from Worcester victorious.

Jumbo field hockey experienced significant growth and achieved great success throughout the regular season. After losing seven seniors to graduation last spring, the team relied on the players’ ability to embrace new roles and their extraordinary work ethic to secure a record of 10–5 going into the postseason.

The matchup proved competitive, as the Bates Bobcats struck first with a goal in the second quarter, but the Jumbos reset during halftime and responded with a vengeance, scoring two goals in the third quarter and maintaining the lead to secure a 2–1 victory.

On Sept. 21, the women’s field hockey team’s winning streak reached six games after a 2–1 victory over the Wesleyan Cardinals on their home turf. Successful corners in the first half gave the Jumbos a two-goal advantage, and they held onto that lead for the entire game despite frequent threats and a fourth-quarter spark from the Cardinals. The Jumbos capitalized on penalty instances, exhibiting finesse and offensive preparation when the Cardinals lost a player due to a green card, racking up a total of five shots compared to the Cardinals’ three.

The Jumbos made a statement to the entire NESCAC, scoring early and often via creative pass plays and consistent defense.

Tufts field hockey took on Hamilton College in a conference matchup on Sunday and came away with a convincing 4–0 win. Fresh off of a 4–2 victory over the Bates Bobcats on Saturday, the Jumbos carried their momentum and stuck to their game plan, which led them to success. After this successful NESCAC double-header, the Jumbos stand at an impressive 6–1 record and a perfect 4–0 in conference play.
