Annie Erin Clark, who goes by the stage name St. Vincent, has returned on her seventh studio album “All Born Screaming,” released on Friday. The album has already received much critical praise for its heavier, moodier rock instrumentation — a departure from the dreamier motifs of the artist’s most recent LP “Daddy’s Home” (2021). “All Born Screaming” is more reminiscent of “MASSEDUCTION” (2017), but is a new direction for St. Vincent.

“Cowboy Carter” (2024) is immense. In its length, stylistic quantity and cultural capital, “Cowboy Carter” is an immense album from one of the greatest musicians and artistic visionaries of the 20th century: Beyoncé. The album was released on March 29 to much critical acclaim, and for good reason.

Discarding the mania and disco pop of tracks like “Washing Machine Heart” (2018) and the heart-breaking rage behind others like “Brand New City” (2012), Mitski’s seventh studio album heralds a new, quiet and reflective age of Mitski’s artistry. “The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We” (2023) was released on Sept. 15 to much initial acclaim, and for good reason.

Ever since the release of her 2018 album “Isolation,”Kali Uchis has made a name for herself as a Colombian American singer with roots in an eclectic mix of genres. With themes of contemporary R&B, hip-hop, Latin trap and neo-soul, “Isolation” was an album saturated with personality and promise. Uchis was a piano student and jazz saxophonist in her youth, and it is this musical experience that shapes and gives life to most of her successful music.

In a unique marriage of honesty and the outrageous, “Big Mouth” (2017–) has returned. The hit adult cartoon dropped its fifth season to Netflix on Nov. 5, and it is quite possibly one of its best. A show that has followed the story of the horny, pubescent students of Bridgeton Middle School seems to have recovered its footing this season after a rocky fourth season. The coming-of-age style of the series became popular for its raunchy humor and ability to tackle many of the issues faced by preteens as they go through puberty, mental health struggles and social and familial conflicts. This particular season is as uncomfortable and weird as the rest, sometimes taking jokes and shock value moments too far, but it also demonstrates what is so special about the show.

There are certain feelings that cannot be put into words. That feeling which is a combination of joy, good vibes and a solid bass line, and which is best encapsulated by “An Evening With Silk Sonic” (2021), is one of them. Released on Nov. 12, the album is the synthesis of creative genius. Pop culture icon Bruno Mars and the masterful Anderson .Paak are Silk Sonic, and their shared project “An Evening With Silk Sonic” is the perfect blend of ‘70s soul and disco topped off by a large dose of modern charisma. With the legendary Bootsy Collins narrating the album throughout, the album is an ode to the music and style of the ‘70s, but “An Evening With Silk Sonic” is entirely unique to Mars and Paak. Highlighting Paak’s effortless rapping and Mars’ signature vocal style, the album isn’t just an imitation of ‘70s music — it’s a reflection on its influence on modern music.

Three days in harsh sunlight, surrounded at any given time by hundreds — if not thousands — of people: glitter, neon polyester and discarded hard seltzer cans everywhere. The Governors Ball Music Festival 2021 was, simply put, a lot.

It has been almost three years since the release of the multi-platinum certified “Old Town Road” (2019) which started rapper Montero Lamar Hill, better known as Lil Nas X, on the proverbial road to fame.Over the course of those years, Lil Nas X went from working two jobs at Zaxby’s and Six Flags Over Georgia to becoming a global superstar.“Old Town Road” was the song that changed his life, and the music scene, dramatically. Pulling together a banjo, collaboration from rock band Nine Inch Nails and a $30 beat,Lil Nas X created the most certified song in history. It seemed likely that Lil Nas X might be a one-hit wonder or struggle to find his footing in a music industry that is often openly hostile to people of color, especially those who identify as members of the LGBTQ community as he does.

Playful, sexual, loving and sad — the debut album from Norwegian singer-songwriter Girl in Red is all of these things. Girl in Red, or Marie Ulven, first rose to fame from past singles like “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend” (2017) and “We Fell In Love In October” (2018), and has since become a popular icon of queer pride. But her album, “If I Could Make It Go Quiet” (2021) proves that she has the artistry to back up her symbolic status.

“Adrenaline and excitement and exhaustion” was how Marlo Shankweiler described her and her bandmates’ “double [lives].” “Awesome” and “intense” were some of the words used by Veronica Stewart-Frommer, but there is likely no better way to describe the band Melt than "sensational."
