The sex discussion on campus often tip?toes around the dirty details, whether it be during the Undergraduate Orientation program, within groups such as Action for Sexual Assault Prevention (ASAP) or in the Disorientation Guide published this year. These efforts have tackled concepts like consent and sexual assault, and try to drive home to students the pressing need for a conversation.

On Oct. 17, Angie Epifano's "An Account of Sexual Assault at Amherst College" was published in the Amherst Student, the independent newspaper of Amherst College. Within days, Epifano's story had been retold by various news sources, including Slate and feminist blog Jezebel.

Last Wednesday, The Amherst Student ran a firsthand account of former Amherst College student Angie Epifano's experience with sexual assault. The piece, in which Epifano describes her rape by a male student and the Amherst's administration's subsequent failures in dealing with her case, has prompted others, including one Tufts student, to share similar stories.

Mike Aresco (LA '72, F '73) doesn't get much time to stop and reflect these days. In August, he was named commissioner of a Big East Conference in turmoil, and since then he's been in the media and all over the country, explaining his vision for the conference's future and attempting to work out a new TV deal.

As a Christian and a Tufts student, I am calling for the immediate de-funding of the so-called Tufts Christian Fellowship (TCF), a chapter of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA (IVCF). IVCF continues to promote anti-gay hate speech while acting as the oversight advisory for TCF's funding, taken from the Student Activities Fee. This is unacceptable.

Though the Tufts Community Union (TCU) Senate takes a lot of criticism from the student body, it would be a mistake to undervalue its importance on campus. TCU Senators are responsible for allocating $1.5 million to more than 200 student groups each year, and they meet regularly with administrators to discuss campus issues. Students should think very carefully about whom they want representing their needs to University President Anthony Monaco, and regardless of how you value our opinion, we urge you to look closely at Wyatt Cadley's and Logan Cotton's agendas and judge each of their visions of Tufts for yourself.

In October of 2010 during my junior year at Tufts, I was sexually assaulted on campus by a student from a different university. Too ashamed to burden my friends with the immediate aftermath, I turned to Tufts' counseling center and Health Services for some much-needed support. Thankfully, it also happened to be sexual assault awareness month at Tufts, and there were weekly events that allowed me to connect with other women on campus with similar experiences. I remember wordlessly sitting in the cold with an enraged yet loving friend. I remember attending a concert, lighting a candle on the Tisch roof, decorating a T-shirt, all in honor of victims of sexual assault. I remember waking up every morning wishing it was all just a very bad dream. Although I was physically present at these events, the me on the inside was not nearly ready to fully accept what had happened. For several months, I harbored such a fearful hatred toward men that I could not even begin a real journey toward recovery from rape.

When students with physical or emotional disabilities begin their college years, they're thrown into a world without the support system to which they've become accustomed. Tufts, however, strives to provide a diverse array of services that can make the transition less challenging.

Helicopter parents face a dilemma. While they believe they should be allowed to check on their college student children, these children are also college students, and the university also treats them as independent adults. Tufts is therefore required to protect their confidentiality if parental interference is undesired.
