Monday's NHL trade deadline brought the customary annual excitement for hardcore hockey fans. As 3 p.m. drew closer and closer, pundits and fans feverishly monitored Twitter and refreshed browser windows, waiting for a game-changing trade to happen at any moment.

If Flo Rida's 2010 hit from the "Step Up 3D" (2010) soundtrack, "Club Can't Handle Me," is in any way autobiographical, he is, according to the definitions and classifications found in the DSM-IV-TR, the bearer of many, many mental health scars. The lyrics read like the diary of a psych ward inhabitant: delusions, grandiose thoughts, paranoid ramblings — it's all there, each line more incriminating and worrisome than the one before it.

Papers, internships, reading, clubs, studying — the list of common sources of stress for college students is all too familiar. According to a recent University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) survey, however, first-year college students now report poorer emotional health than ever before.

As you walk around Tufts, it is likely that you will overhear several conversations regarding drugs. For some, it may be regaling tales of shots taken and beers "shotgun'd." Others may be doting praise upon the stimulants that kept them trucking through finals. And, of course, conversations on the artistic merit of glassware and the dankness of a particular plant are a constant in certain circles. Affecting one's mental state through mind-altering substances is embedded in the human experience, being particularly prominent among college students. This enthusiasm suggests the potential for more comprehensive dialogue, one that critically examines the United States' war on drugs and the complementary, unsustainable growth of the American prison-industrial complex. If we are to create a more perfect union, one that is both just and cost-effective, we must reform the broken institution of the American prison system. For the sake of our wallets and our souls, something needs to be done.

It took less than a day for the Tucson shooting on Jan. 8 to turn into a political battleground. Only hours after the tragedy unfolded, news stations were airing on repeat an interview from last March in which Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D−Ariz.) herself warned that the heated rhetoric of the right could have violent consequences. Sarah Palin was vilified by the liberal blogosphere, and searches for her "crosshairs map" surged on Google and Yahoo search engines.

College students turn to a long list of activities to relax and blow off steam — working out, socializing, playing sports — the list goes on. But Christopher Willard, staff psychologist at Counseling and Mental Health Service (CMHS) and member of the board of directors at Boston's Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy, recommends they add another, more exotic activity to that list: meditation.

For some reason, it has become acceptable — even commonplace — for the typical college student to go out during the week. Tufts does Tuesday and Thursday, my friends' schools do Wednesday and some schools even do Sunday and Monday. Generally speaking, this behavior is neither healthy nor acceptable, but the concern doesn't seem to deter many students come nine o'clock. It's a way to break up the week; nothing seems further away from Monday morning than Friday night, and who really wants to wait that long anyway? However, going out and going to class the next day has students paying the price — it's amazing how so many of us schedule our week around a class-free Friday just to avoid this cost.

Tufts' chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) has not yet reached a first−semester milestone of existence, and already, much controversy has been generated on campus directly or indirectly as a result of its activities. It seems that many students and faculty of all opinions on the issue of the Israeli−Palestinian conflict have taken notice of the increase in the heat of the dialogue on campus.

While many assume that cyberbullying — the willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones and other electronic devices — is an issue that predominantly impacts high school and middle school students, the recent suicide of Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi has brought to light the prevalence of Internet harassment on college campuses as well.

It's the day before a final. You haven't opened a textbook in weeks and your class attendance is spotty, but it's too late to drop the class. The pressure to do well is immense, but your stress and anxiety are keeping you from studying effectively. Good thing there's a pill for that.

The NBA season tips off in just a week, and with Allen "the Answer" Iverson rumored to be headed to Turkey, the Eastern Conference is left with a number of questions. Will the Miami Heat gel faster than Pat Riley's hair? Will the Boston Celtics have time to fit AARP meetings into their already tight schedule? Will Vince Carter once again lead the league in winces and grimaces, or will he set a career-high in minutes played through pain?
