All in Good Taste: Mamaleh's

“I don’t just want potato latkes … I need them,” I told my roommate Saturday morning. One of the things I miss most about home is my weekly trip to the local Jewish deli. For weeks, I had been dreaming about matzah ball soup and noodle kugel. After a quick Google search, we hop in a car and ...

'The Crown' is good, not groundbreaking

"The Crown" (2016) is marketed as Netflix’s most ambitious project, and in a sense, it is: the show is rumored to have a production budget of $156 million, a humongous number for any type of series. Additionally, the show is planned to span six seasons, with an alternating cast depicting ...

The Reel World: 'Election'

Since the election will finally be over after today, I feel it’s only appropriate to approach political films in this column. This is mostly a byproduct of my habit of actively ignoring all remotely political news and kind of just hoping it will go away. However, as Election Day drew nearer and nearer, ...

'Hacksaw Ridge' is brutal, effective

It is evident from “Hacksaw Ridge,” Mel Gibson’s first film as a director since “Apocalypto” (2006), that the director's filmmaking ability has not waned in the intervening decade. The new film is a chronicle of real-life World War II conscientious objector Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield),a ...

Is This Thing On? Making music great again

The opening line of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth,” (1967), in which he sings "There’s something happening here / But what it is ain’t exactly clear," is something you've probably said to yourself (many times) in the past year with regard to the 2016 presidential election. Let’s get right into it. Music is a creative outlet for artists and a source of entertainment for listeners. But more importantly, though perhaps often forgotten, it’s a powerful tool for social change.

The Reel World: Kirsten Dunst

As I was going over my plans for flying home over Thanksgiving, “Elizabethtown” (2005) came into my head immediately. In the film, Orlando Bloom portrays Drew Baylor, a shoe designer who returns to his Kentucky hometown for his father’s funeral. More famously, however, “Elizabethtown” is the ...

'Inferno:' all smoke, no fire

In the second sequel to “The Da Vinci Code” (2006), “Inferno,” which was released on Oct. 28, sees the fate of the world rest on the structural integrity of a Ziploc bag. The fact that this is the least of the film’s problems speaks volumes. But yes, evil billionaire Bertrand Zobrist (Ben ...

Is this thing on? #Only90sKidsWillRemember

Happy (post-) Halloween! Here's something that is probably scarier than checking your Venmo history from this weekend — your iTunes library from 2008! As a tween, you probably dabbled a little -- or a lot -- in the emo-pop-punk scene or whatever name you gave to the music of Fall Out Boy, The All-American Rejects, Panic! At The Disco and many more. It’s just one part of our adolescence that the middle schoolers in 2016 don't have. Perhaps today’s youth aren’t any less embarrassing than we were, but they do have VSCO filters, which kind of take the edge off. Technically speaking, real 90s kids experienced their formative years in the mid-2000s, and what a time it was. Yes, I’m talking about sleepovers spent playing Rock Band (2007) and texting on LG flip phones with monthly SMS limits. What better way to get over your ex than by blasting “The Great Escape” (2006) by Boys Like Girls? So I have a few questions: Why did this music end? Where are they now? And will there ever be a resurgence of our angsty teenage anthems?
