'The Maze Runner' has high-speed action, muddled plot

Hurdling upward fast, and with no visible escape, Thomas -- the protagonist of “The Maze Runner,” played by Dylan O’Brien -- seems to be trapped in the world's scariest dumbwaiter. Released last Friday, “The Maze Runner” is a movie adaptation of James Dashner’s 2009 novel of the same ...

Leonard Cohen burns slow and bright on powerful new album

Deliberately slow, never lethargic and just slinky enough to avoid being soporific, Leonard Cohen’s new album, “Popular Problems,” was released on Sept. 23 -- two days after Cohen's 80th birthday. The album proves that the singer-songwriter is not only timeless but musically transcendent. ...

'The Drop' delivers pleasant movie-goer experience

Crime dramas have the propensity to conjure images of Brooklyn's back alleys,  intimidating mobsters torturing innocents and -- of course -- an excess of gun violence. This fall’s newest crime drama, "The Drop," (released on Sept. 12) aligns itself with these archetypes, but sets ...

'The Mindy Project' succeeds, avoids common rom-com pitfalls

There are TV shows that start off brilliantly, but after a season or two lose some steam.  There are also shows that have quite a rocky start and find their voice and footing in the seasons that follow. "The Mindy Project" (2012-present) is on its way to becoming part of the latter group. Season after season, the main characters continue to be fleshed out with a little more characterization. Even better, the show stays fresh with increasingly wacked-out story lines, as each episode puts less of an emphasis on Mindy finding a boyfriend.

'Utopia' strives to create new society, falls flat

"Since the dawn of time, humans have always wondered: does a perfect world exist? Now, we get the chance to build one. Will it be ultimate happiness or utter chaos?" muses the IMDb plot summary for "Utopia" (2014-present). Fox’s new reality series, "Utopia," aspires to ...

'Hawkeye' comic series charms and entertains

For Marvel movie viewers who have never read the comics, Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, is probably the least-known and under-appreciated of the superhero clique The Avengers. He had barely any development in “The Avengers” (2012), aside from a few witty lines and some badass arrow-slinging stunts. ...

'If I Stay' struggles to keep audiences in their seats

When a car crash changes her life and family forever, Mia falls into a coma, hovering near death. While her body lies unconscious, however, Mia has an out-of-body experience, rendering her aware of her surroundings and the aftermath of the accident. Given the pain and trauma that has abruptly transformed her life, Mia has an impossible choice before her. Will she live and deal with pain, loss and grief, or choose death?
