The news is not #TheNews, reflecting on #TheDress

Last Thursday, social media blew up with an image of a simple striped dress. Group chats, Facebook timelines, Twitter feeds, tumblr blogs, BuzzFeed and more were littered with posts about the now infamous dress that sometimes appeared to be blue and black and at other times appeared to be gold and white. ...

Qatar’s got a brand new bag

It has only been a hobby for a few years, but I can’t stop following soccer. It makes for a lot of fun when it overlaps with Middle East politics. It seems they have found a strange intersection in Qatar. Otherwise known as the beautiful game, soccer now plays a key role in the new Qatari grand strategy. This ...

Questioning our 'Birthright'

We write this op-ed as Jewish Tufts students who went on Taglit-Birthright Israel. In sharing some of our experiences, we hope other students may begin to question Birthright. Birthright exposed us to the facts on the ground in Israel/Palestine and forced us to confront and reject the Zionist ideologies ...

Bibi Netanyahu’s one way street

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to speak in front of Congress -- without a Presidential invite -- in the middle of his own campaign at home is worthy of admiration only for sheer boldness. In every other sense, Netanyahu’s decision to intervene in American politics to benefit ...

TCU Senate: save our teams

The tournament director peered across the room, his reddish beard crinkling as he grinned. “Where are the Jumbos of Tufts University?” his voice boomed, amplified by the microphone. Three hundred competitors turned in their seats to look at us. “Jumbos,” he said, “Do the elephant thing you do!” We glanced at each other, laughing nervously. We stood, and in a low whisper, “Ready? Jumbos on three. One, two, three … BPPRHHHFF!” Students and coaches from around the nation cheered as we trumpeted.

Letter to the Editor regarding El Tit op-ed

On behalf of the TCU Judiciary (TCUJ), I would like to respond to Madeline Bacchus' March 2 op-ed "El Tit fills the gap other publications can't."In determining the recognition status of new and existing groups on campus, the TCUJ relies on a stringent set of bylaws that require, among other criteria, three proofs of activity and being active on campus for at least a semester. When El Tit applied for recognition this past fall, they did not meet some of these criteria and therefore the TCUJ was obliged to vote not to recognize them. However, I absolutely agree with Madeline's assessment that El Tit is an "important and necessary" voice on campus. The TCUJ strongly encourages El Tit to re-apply for recognition next fall, when it is able to fulfill all of the requirements for recognition with what I am sure will be hilarious and flying colors.

Teaching life: Black freedom, Palestinian liberation

I am not writing this to provide fodder for the onslaught of Zionist and inherently racist rhetoric that is sure to accompany my words in the comments section once this is posted online. It is not that I don’t respect those who disagree with the basic aim of Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW), which is ...

All the president's half-ply

Tufts, like any other institution that wants to remain profitable and in business, is focused on efficiency. A university that caters to over 5,000 students – to say nothing of the faculty – obviously buys things in bulk, which is fine. In addition, it's not that hard to see why offering free, ...

El Tit fills the gap other publications can’t

If you’ve been lucky, you may have gotten your hands on one of the few copies of El Tit within the past week or two. The “only oldest, co-ed, non-acapella, unrecognized” feminist satirical magazine made its debut very recently in black and white, stapled-together booklets. Though the material ...

Musings of a concerned brother and friend

Respect those who disagree with you in debate

It is a natural phenomenon that debate strengthens discourse. Imagine how dull conversation would be were it not spiked with a variety of opinions and plenty of arguing. The limits of free speech, however, have reached the forefront of social issues being discussed today. Much of this began with the ...
