It Happens Here, still
By Allyson Blackburn | February 22Trigger warning: This article contains references to sexual abuse.I am no longer surprised when my friends disclose to me. Isn’t that a horrible thing to say, or to be true?We live in a world where violence seems to be the norm. Most recently, it was a friend who referred to her assault as “that ...

Letter to the Editor: In response to Miranda Willson's 'Politics, pollution and "over-population"'
By Thomas Dixon | February 22I would first like to address Miranda Willson’s closing statement “…we need to change the way we talk about population control as an 'environmental' effort, when it has nothing to do with the environment…”In response to this statement, I would encourage interested readers to look into ...
Campus-carry gun laws easily dismissed due to flawed logic
By The Tufts Daily | February 22Lawmakers in 10 states are vying for the passage of bills that would permit the carrying of concealed firearms on college campuses, arguing that likely victims of sexual assault -- female students, as they are so predominately defined by these lawmakers -- would be safer if they were allowed to have ...
Proposed snow dump raises environmental concerns for Boston Harbor
By The Tufts Daily | February 18These days it really seems that all everyone talks or thinks about is the insane amount of snow that Boston has received so far this winter. And you can’t blame them, as the snow has become an all-consuming monstrosity, taking a toll on all activities, classes and work. Here in the Boston area, ...
How to speak 'Hawk'
By Daniel Weaver | February 18In his Feb. 12 op-ed, tritely titled ‘A time to break eggs,’ Zach Shapiro advocates for a full-fledged ground invasion aimed at ISIS. Though a brash call for war, what I think is most important about this piece is its frequent indulgence in a unique brand of American political language: Hawk rhetoric. ...

Letter to the Editor: remembering the Chapel Hill victims
By Benjamin Hosking | February 18I read Shaan Shaikh's article on Tuesday, February 17th 2015 entitled "Remembering the Chapel Hill victims" with a mixed reaction. Although I applaud the author's points about taking action to aid Syrian refugees, volunteering at soup kitchens, and proactively working to better the ...
Double standards in Greek Life partying needs to end
By The Tufts Daily | February 18A study from 2007 shows that women who are regular attendees at frat parties are at higher risk of sexual assault. Besides measures to regulate the drinking scene at frat parties, many students from different colleges have suggested that sororities should be allowed to host parties at which alcohol is served in order to reduce the risk of sexual assaults, which are some of the most under-reported crimes on college campuses. However, the reason that sororities should be allowed to host such parties does not stem solely from sexual assault prevention efforts, but also from the need to reverse an inherent double standard that exists in Greek Life today.
Kiev: a case against arms
By Sam Berzok | February 17It is time for the United States to evaluate our current foreign policy options in the embattled borders of Ukraine. Our millennial generation has sat back and watched the spottiness of President Obama’s foreign policy in the Middle East, Europe and elsewhere abroad. Every geopolitical crisis has ...
Feminism, relationships and the power of the BuzzFeed quiz
By Alexandra Dorfman | February 16There was a point in my life, sometime last year, when I didn’t know what BuzzFeed was. Sometimes, I wish I could go back to that point in my life. I hate BuzzFeed. I think it’s dumb, I think it’s basic and I think it’s useless. But the worst part of Buzzfeed is that when I am trying to write ...
Fanatics in movements must not be seen as representatives
By The Tufts Daily | February 16Last Tuesday, a 46-year-old man named Craig Stephen Hicks murdered three Muslim college students: Yusor Mohammad, age 21, Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23 and Razan Mohammad, 19. The details of what actually occurred leading up to the attack are still foggy, and we are just as far from understanding Hicks’ ...
Remembering the Chapel Hill victims
By Shaan Shaikh | February 16Indifferent. That’s how I would describe my initial reaction to the Chapel Hill shootings, in which three innocent Muslims were shot and killed in their own home. Indifferent – a terrible way to feel about any death. I quickly skimmed through the news on my laptop. “A couple Muslims killed over ...
A time to break eggs
By Zach Shapiro | February 11For all his idiosyncrasies and egotism, I’m confident that Tyler Durden, of “Fight Club” fame, would have made a formidable military strategist. His musing that “If you want to make an omelet, you’ve gotta break some eggs,” aptly characterizes grounded, honest realism. It is exceedingly relevant in the age of ISIS, ISIL, or whatever it is we choose to call them today.
Stewart leaves politics better than he found it
By Jamie Neikrie | February 11After 16 years, Jon Stewart is departing from “The Daily Show.” Since taking over as host in 1999 from Craig Kilborn, Stewart turned the late-night satire show into a source of scathing wit, a place of social and political commentary and a cultural phenomenon. Stewart announced his plans to depart ...
