Trigger warning: This article contains references to sexual abuse.I am no longer surprised when my friends disclose to me. Isn’t that a horrible thing to say, or to be true?We live in a world where violence seems to be the norm. Most recently, it was a friend who referred to her assault as “that ...

How to speak 'Hawk'

In his Feb. 12 op-ed, tritely titled ‘A time to break eggs,’ Zach Shapiro advocates for a full-fledged ground invasion aimed at ISIS. Though a brash call for war, what I think is most important about this piece is its frequent indulgence in a unique brand of American political language: Hawk rhetoric. ...

Double standards in Greek Life partying needs to end

A study from 2007 shows that women who are regular attendees at frat parties are at higher risk of sexual assault. Besides measures to regulate the drinking scene at frat parties, many students from different colleges have suggested that sororities should be allowed to host parties at which alcohol is served in order to reduce the risk of sexual assaults, which are some of the most under-reported crimes on college campuses. However, the reason that sororities should be allowed to host such parties does not stem solely from sexual assault prevention efforts, but also from the need to reverse an inherent double standard that exists in Greek Life today.

The details of what actually occurred leading up to the attack are still foggy, and we are just as far from understanding Hicks’ ...

Remembering the Chapel Hill victims

Indifferent. That’s how I would describe my initial reaction to the Chapel Hill shootings, in which three innocent Muslims were shot and killed in their own home. Indifferent – a terrible way to feel about any death. I quickly skimmed through the news on my laptop. “A couple Muslims killed over ...

A time to break eggs

For all his idiosyncrasies and egotism, I’m confident that Tyler Durden, of “Fight Club” fame, would have made a formidable military strategist. His musing that “If you want to make an omelet, you’ve gotta break some eggs,” aptly characterizes grounded, honest realism. It is exceedingly relevant in the age of ISIS, ISIL, or whatever it is we choose to call them today.

Stewart leaves politics better than he found it

After 16 years, Jon Stewart is departing from “The Daily Show.” Since taking over as host in 1999 from Craig Kilborn, Stewart turned the late-night satire show into a source of scathing wit, a place of social and political commentary and a cultural phenomenon. Stewart announced his plans to depart ...
