Columbus Day needs more than new name

Although Columbus Day may be several months away, a debate over changing the name of the holiday is underway at Tufts. When we celebrate Columbus Day, we blindly pay homage to a long history of genocide and colonization. Rather than honor a man who played an instrumental role in initiating centuries ...

Go Down, Moses

My first reaction to the Tufts Hillel initiative to bring Trayvon Martin’s parents to campus for a discussion on gun violence was that it is unremarkable. Not in the sense of being unimportant, but rather that it is exactly what I expect from an organization that “walks the talk” in its commitment ...

After the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the military support of eastern Ukrainian rebels, Russia has risen to the top of the international political agenda. Today some experts compare Vladimir Putin’s regime with the totalitarian expansionist power of Josef Stalin or Adolf Hitler. There are a lot ...

My grandmother’s gas tank is always full

How to speak 'Hawk'

In his Feb. 12 op-ed, tritely titled ‘A time to break eggs,’ Zach Shapiro advocates for a full-fledged ground invasion aimed at ISIS. Though a brash call for war, what I think is most important about this piece is its frequent indulgence in a unique brand of American political language: Hawk rhetoric. ...

Double standards in Greek Life partying needs to end

A study from 2007 shows that women who are regular attendees at frat parties are at higher risk of sexual assault. Besides measures to regulate the drinking scene at frat parties, many students from different colleges have suggested that sororities should be allowed to host parties at which alcohol is served in order to reduce the risk of sexual assaults, which are some of the most under-reported crimes on college campuses. However, the reason that sororities should be allowed to host such parties does not stem solely from sexual assault prevention efforts, but also from the need to reverse an inherent double standard that exists in Greek Life today.
