CSL resolution unfairly prioritizes one fundamental right over others
December 5In an email sent to the Tufts community yesterday afternoon, the Committee on Student Life (CSL) announced that it had crafted a new policy allowing for all student religious groups (SRGs) going forward to "justify on doctrinal grounds any departures from Tufts' nondiscrimination policy ... that their leadership positions require." This was in response to the Tufts Community Union Judiciary's (TCUJ) derecognition of Tufts Christian Fellowship (TCF) in October due to "concerns that the TCF's criteria for leaders violated Tufts University's nondiscrimination policy." In the future, the University Chaplain will review submitted proposals for exemption, and if approved, the SRG in question will be allowed to apply for recognition from the Judiciary - with any faith-based leadership criteria intact.
Governor Patrick's budget cuts embody fiscal cliff's high stakes
December 4Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick held a press conference yesterday describing coming budget cuts for the 2013 fiscal year due to a projected hole of $540 million in the state budget. The governor described the cuts as mostly coming from executive branch bureaucracy and agencies in the state government, as well as being pulled from the "Rainy Day Fund," which will still have "a balance of $1.2 billion, one of the highest in the country," according to Patch's Beach Hill site. The rest will be filled with other small savings and a small percentage of cuts to local aid at the county and municipal levels.

Athletics not root of Armstrong's honorary degree
December 2After a recent report from the U.S Anti?Doping Agency all but confirmed that champion cyclist and testicular cancer survivor Lance Armstrong engaged in illegal doping during his run of seven Tour de France titles - titles that were subsequently voided - many of his former sponsors have distanced themselves from an athlete who, for over a decade, was a role model worldwide.
Mae Humiston & Sara Gardner | Let's Talk About Food
November 28Up until this point in this column, we have discussed only the physical processes surrounding food. This part of the food discussion was primarily concerned with how our dishes look and taste, as well as where our food comes from and where it goes once we finish it. But beyond the tangible trappings of the food?cycle, there is also an entirely imperceptible realm of culture, ritual and spirituality associated with it. Food has always been an intrinsic part of cultures all around the world. Our food is infused with meaning, which permeates into its lifecycle from production to disposal.
