While many Tufts' students will enjoy a Passover seder this weekend, the men's baseball team hopes to feast on a smorgasbord of Wesleyen Cardinals. The Jumbos will take on the Cardinals in a pair of home and away doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, both at 1 p.m.
With Tufts off to an inauspicious 5-5-1 start - and Wesleyan boasting a 10-3-1 record - this weekend could be a backbreaker for the Jumbos. Nevertheless, both squads have perfect records in the all-important NESCAC. Tufts (2-0) is second in the NESCAC East, behind Trinity, and the Cardinals are at the top of the standings in the West at 3-0.
Still, after the Jumbos' upped their winning streak to three with a 17-3 thrashing of Mass. Maritime Academy on Wednesday, the Cardinals must be molting a bit at the thought of facing a hot Tufts squad. Sophomore shortstop ended Tufts' slow start to the season by exploding against Mass. Maritime. Shapiro went 4-6 with two doubles and seven RIB, nearly doubling his season total of four entering the game.
The pitching is also beginning to heat up, as Jumbos hurlers have held the opposition under four runs in each of their last three contests. Sophomore Dave Martin highlighted the trio of strong pitching performances by tossing eight no-hit innings on Wednesday.
