Tufts Jumbos fall midseason report card

Men's Cross Country A-

4th, 8th, 1st, 3rd

An incomplete grade so far, given that the Jumbos usually only run half the team. The one time they all ran, they dominated their Jumbo Invitational. Greater tests await, starting tomorrow at the All-New England Championship at Franklin Park.

Women's Cross Country B+

1st, 4th, 2nd

Solid start for a young team that is still learning. The women have yet to finish in the second half of any field, and they've notched a first place at the Conn. College Invite and a second at the Jumbo Invitational.

Field Hockey A-

5-2 (2-2)

New coach Tina McDavitt has her Jumbos off to a fine start, especially at home where they have yet to lose. Senior tri-captain Dana Panzer (pictured right, 8 g, 5 a) and junior tri-captain Lea Napolitano lead the offense. That 7-1 shellacking at MIddlebury keeps them from a straight A, but they're looking solid, and they should only get better.

Football INC

1-1

Too soon to tell. Week one was ugly, no doubt about that. Week's two grinder of a victory over Bates was nice, and senior QB Jason Casey looked a lot sharper. But when you haven't lost to a team since 1985, a two point win is nothing to get too giddy about. Stay tuned.

Men's Soccer C

3-3-1 (1-3)

A bad Homecoming loss and rumors of internal strife, combined with trouble finishing, especially against NESCAC foes, has the squad down despite its .500 record. Tie at highly-ranked MIT was the high point.

Women's Soccer C+

2-3-2 (1-1-2)

First loss to Brandeis since 1996 isn't good. And neither is an offense that at times can be lackluster. But the squad put together its first win streak over Homecoming weekend, sits in fourth in the NESCAC despite underperforming, and we're taking injuries into consideration.

Women's Tennis B+

5-1 (3-1)

The women opened their fall campaign on a dominant roll with three 9-0 wins, but have suffered back-to-back losses to Middlebury and Welseley.

Volleyball A-

14-3 (3-0)

A very impressive season so far for the volleyball squad, especially considering the fact that senior co-captain Emily Macy has missed part of it. A seventh place finish at the highly-competitive MIT tournament keeps them from an A+, but this squad has looked very strong so far. Their victory in theTufts Invitational on Friday and Saturday was lost in the hubaloo of Homecoming.
