Eight fresh faces will join Tufts Community Union (TCU) leaders after winning spots in yesterday's elections.
The Class of 2013 elected its seven TCU senators amid 57 percent voter turnout. Ard Ardalan, Faith Blake, Wyatt Cadley, Emil Cliggott-Perlt, Yulia Korovikov, Alice Pang and Shawyoun Shaidani won out over a crowded field of 16 candidates. They will represent the Class of 2013 in the TCU Senate.
In an election for the one vacant seat on the TCU Judiciary, freshman Greg Bodwin beat four other competitors.
The elections, originally scheduled for Wednesday, were postponed one day due to technical difficulties with the online voting service VoteNet.
Polling was open all 24 hours on Thursday. There were some minor technical problems with voting just after the polls opened at midnight early Thursday, but Elections Commission (ECOM) Chair Kevin Terhorst called the election successful.
There were "a couple isolated incidents" of people not being able to vote initially, but ECOM was able to resolve them within minutes," said Terhorst, a senior. "All things considered, it was a smooth election," said Terhorst, a senior.
TCU President Brandon Rattiner, a senior, was satisfied with the election proceedings and said he is excited about the new crop of senators.
"I want to commend ECOM on handling the election really well," he said. "I think we picked seven tremendous candidates, and I'm really excited to start working with them."
Terhorst said the 57 percent turnout is on the low side of the average range for TCU freshman elections. Last year's record 70 percent turnout was an "unexpectedly high" figure, he said. He attributed part of the drop in this year's turnout to the changed election date.
