Beyond Boundaries: The Campaign for Tufts, the largest university-wide capital campaign in Tufts history, has come to a close having reached its $1.2 billion goal.
The campaign concluded on schedule by the end of University President Lawrence Bacow's 10-year tenure at Tufts, despite what Director of Public Relations Kim Thurler called "the most challenging economic environment in decades."
Initiated by Bacow with a quiet phase in 2002 and publicly launched in 2006, Beyond Boundaries has focused on improving student experience, developing a strong core faculty and bolstering university facilities.
The campaign raised $434 million for financial aid and other support to enhance student life. 630 new endowed and term scholarships were created with funds donated by nearly 140,000 donors.
Donors contributed $386 million towards faculty recruitment and research, helping to create 23 new named professorships. An additional $137 million funded new construction and renovations on all three of Tufts' Massachusetts campuses.
The last year of fundraising saw over $41 million donated in honor of Bacow in the final year of his presidency. These funds have largely gone towards causes particularly meaningful to Bacow and his wife Adele Fleet Bacow, including renovations of the athletic facilities and financial aid.
The six largest gifts in Tufts history, which were donated throughout the course of the campaign, accounted for $609 million, just over half of the total sum raised.
