School spirit extinguished by Senate

I think all of us know what an amazing place Tufts is. As President John DiBiaggio always says, "It doesn't get any better then Tufts." The Tufts University Spirit Coalition's (TUSC) role is to make sure everyone has school spirit. School spirit is not just supporting a football team or cheering at a game, but it is a sense of community. When a group is bonded together and proud of what it does, it is spirited. TUSC's goal is to make everyone proud that they are a Jumbo. I feel that one way this is can be done is by building a sense of community.

Creed turns pyro

For a band that's criticized almost more often than it receives praise, Creed has risen to the top of the modern rock heap almost instantaneously. From the two albums the Florida quartet has released in the past two years, seven singles have hit the airwaves - and every one has peaked at number one on Billboard's Modern Rock chart. Just in case the band had anything left to prove, it certainly did it this weekend with a phenomenal live show at UMass Amherst's Mullins Center.

Teamwork, intensity lead to women's frisbee success

Those who think frisbee is a simple game played on the quad when there is nothing better to do should take a look at the intense practices the women's ultimate frisbee team runs. Those who think frisbee is a harmless game played by those who cannot handle serious sports should check out the mud and blood stains on the jerseys at the end of a two-day tournament.

Bridging the US - South Asia divide

Two years ago, when India and Pakistan tested their budding nuclear arsenals, the world reacted with scorn, fearing that a South Asian nuclear arms race was on the way. The United States, among other countries, took a strong stance against proliferation, but the US quickly found that it lacked the diplomatic footing necessary to convince India and Pakistan to curb their nuclear aspirations. During the Cold War, the Indian Subcontinent had been all but ignored by American policymakers and presidents.

Paintings at MFA suspected stolen during Nazi regime

The looting of precious works of art by the Nazi regime during the Holocaust and World War II was, unfortunately, a common practice. As a result, many leading museums have unknowingly come into possession of the "stolen" masterpieces without knowing their true origin and history. Boston's Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) posted on its website last Monday a list of seven European paintings whose origins are, at the moment, dubious.

Clarifying TCF's position

I am writing to clarify the reason why Tufts Christian Fellowship (TCF) denied Julie Catalano a leadership position. I have talked to many people, read all the Viewpoints, and listened to many arguments about the issue. On almost every occasion there has been a misconception about TCF's decision.

Telling her stories again

Let's face it. There are few female songwriters today who can really touch their audience with their songs and truly tell a story that goes beyond a catchy musical arrangement and chorus. Certainly, Tracy Chapman is one of these women. Her newest long player, aptly titled Telling Stories, could be one of those albums easily overlooked in a year-end review, because it "only" offers one truly radio-friendly hit. But commercial radio play should not be a measure of the Tufts alum's fifth CD, which follows on the heels of her 1995 multi-platinum record New Beginning.

Washington meets South Asia

It is becoming somewhat of a disturbing South Asian tradition: Midnight celebrations aimed at stirring euphoria and hope among the region's masses, undermined by reality rearing its ugly head at the most auspicious of moments. Fifty-three years ago, at midnight on Aug. 15, 1947, organized street celebrations, parades, flag-flying, and speeches expounding on the region's "tryst with destiny" lit up the region from the Punjabi farmlands outside Lahore to the Bay of Bengal. Unfortunately for Mr. Jinnah and Mr. Nehru, the largest mass migration in the history of humanity was taking place at the very same moment, putting of a damper on the cherished independence day celebrations.

Prepare yourself for celestial sex, soul, and futuristic sound

Supreme Beings of Leisure's self-titled debut album turns techno down a few notches and gives it a drippingly soulful voice. The album's back cover reads, "Supreme Beings of Leisure invite you to kick back and enjoy their debut album." It is an invitation easy enough to accept. As the album plays, grooves shift in and out from playful to honest, creating a delightful hum that never ceases to make the head and other choice body parts move to the beat. As its name suggests, Supreme Beings of Leisure (SBL) is a sophisticated group for the new millennium, and they are not afraid to express this. Their lyrics and rhythms center around the higher aspects of life and culture, from the fast love and desire in "Strangelove Addiction," to family affection in "Always the Sun," to the doubt of a high-paced lifestyle in "Truth From Fiction."
