Pop Filter: A sound strategy

Perhaps a more underappreciated aspect of a cappella music is the technology that supports the singers, amplifying their sound so that it can be heard optimally in a given performance space.A cappella is often described as the music of the people in that it relies solely on the sounds made by the human ...

After Years: Chapter 11

Editor’s note: This column is part of a fictional weekly serial. The samples they were looking for were sequestered in a separate chamber within the biomedical lab. To this door Alicia had neither passcode, nor key nor any instruction as to how to gain access. This was as far as their research had ...

Jumbo Steps: It's time you wash that shirt

I spent $13.50 on laundry yesterday, partly because I hadn’t washed my clothes in a while, but mainly because it’s about damn time I did.You see, I decided to launder the heap of dirty clothes growing slowly in the corner of my dorm room because, if I’m going to procrastinate on my homework, might ...

Planning beyond boundaries

America needs a new map prioritizing our urban regions. We are as strong as our weakest link, and our urban regions are weakened by municipal and state boundaries, forcing us to think small and plan small. Municipalities and states fight to attract businesses and fund transportation links. Resources ...

Don't you cry

Only four months in, I've encountered a serious contender for the best episode of television I’ll watch in 2016. This week, my world was rocked by a cinematic, heartbreaking script brought to life by two beautiful, extraordinary actors — each of them less than half my age. I don’t much care ...

Weird baseball

This past Sunday, my beloved New York Yankees lost a thoroughly uninteresting game to the Tampa Bay Rays. The loss dropped them into last place and saw their highest paid player exit with an injury. Sunday was also the best day of this young baseball season. If not in the Bronx, the thrilling games ...

NYSD: Shortcomings

Rebecca:  This week, I went home for Passover and was reminded of my shortcomings. My mom sent me out to buy Coca-Cola. As I entered the supermarket, I realized that the sodas I needed were on the highest shelf, and the front layers of them were already taken. I knew that getting a Coke would not be ...

V. E. Schwab

I've read a lot of fantasy over the years, from the time that I was a little girl devouring the works of Diana Wynne Jones to my current complicated relationship with “A Song of Ice and Fire” (1996 - present) from George R. R. Martin (yes, I'm still waiting for “The Winds of Winter”). ...

A 21st century bard

I’ll admit that music is probably the medium of art I know least about. Despite having played some sort of instrument on and off for most of my life, I am just not as music savvy as I would like to be. Music is very meaningful to me, and I spend my day listening to an insane hodgepodge of playlists, ...

Jersey Over Apron: Youth Sports

Pop Filter: Sum of all fears

I used to be terrified of singing in front of people. When I was a choir kid in middle school, one of my greatest fears was that I would forget the words to my solo or choke on a high note in front of hundreds of people. After singing solos for audiences for almost a decade, I no longer distinguish ...

On the Spot: The alternative PFA Team of the Year

The PFA recently announced its Team of the Year, with Leicester and Spurs players dominating the team. With only 11 spots on the team, a ton of other players who’ve impressed didn’t make the roster, and here’s my list of possible alternatives — and mind you, even these weren’t easy to filter ...

The Arena: Bulls and Bears

Outside of the Boot: What has happened to Barcelona?

One month ago, Barcelona were atop La Liga, nine points clear of second place Atletico Madrid and in the quarter finals of the Champions League after defeating Arsenal 5-1 on aggregate. It had been 39 games since they had lost in any competition. In their previous 20 league games, they had won 19. In their next game, Barcelona would face their most bitter rival, Real Madrid in the biggest event in Spanish football: El Clásico. In the first meeting between the two sides this season, the team from the Catalan region left the Spanish capital victorious after a dominating 4-0 display at the Bernabeu. Their second meeting would go a little differently. Despite taking a 1-0 lead on 56 minutes, Barcelona went on to lose for the first time in just under six months. Since then, Barcelona have lost four out of their last five, with their only win coming against a 10-man Atletico Madrid side. They have been eliminated from the Champions League in the quarterfinal, and their lead over their La Liga rivals has disintegrated. Their dramatic and sudden loss of form seems as though it has out of nowhere, however hindsight provides indications that their success was hard pressed to last.
