Nonprofit group takes message of active citizenship to Boston youth

Jumbos will proudly admit their devotion to bringing about social change through active citizenship. Members of the Tufts Generation Citizen chapter, however, are not only working with this devotion in mind but are also motivating low−income students throughout the greater Boston area to do the same.

BrandHaiti symposium uses entrepreneurship to confront negative perceptions of Haiti

Tufts' chapter of BrandHaiti, a student−led nonprofit organization seeking to transform the negative cultural images and perceptions of Haiti, on Saturday hosted its second annual Business Symposium, "Investing in Haiti: Challenges, Strategies, Opportunities." The event featured several prominent entrepreneurs and panels discussing entrepreneurship, investment and economic development in Haiti.

Rooftop Comedy's Tufts University Talent Search Winners

The winners of Rooftop Comedy's Tufts University Talent Search (Max Cohen, Ian Donovan, Haydn Forrest, Bradley Frizzell, Clay Grable, Matthew Nazarian, Aliza Small and Sam Zuckert) will go on to compete against Emerson College at Improv Boston on Tuesday, March 27 in the TBS National College Comedy Competition.

During the spring of my freshman year, May 2010, there was a huge water main leak in Weston, Mass. A pipe with a diameter of 10 feet was leaking eight million gallons of water an hour into the Charles River. The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority declared a Boil Water Notice, and for three days, the campus turned into a refugee camp. Those days, you showered fewer times, brushed your teeth with care, and lived in fear of what you were digesting. In Dewick, we ate cold cuts on paper plates, while drinking small plastic cups of boiled water from a cooler.

Ebel's speech compares soldierly betrayal to Judas

Jonathan Ebel, an assistant professor in the Department of Religion at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champlain, last night addressed a crowd of Tufts students and faculty about his interpretation of the American military as a type of civil religion, while casting soldiers who betray the soldierly ideal as modern-day Judases.

With the receipt of a $6.9 million grant, the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy has publicly launched ChildObesity180, a multi−sector organization aimed at supporting research on and the implementation of childhood obesity prevention strategies.

Elizabeth Warren supporters hold voter registration drives on campus

Tufts Students for Elizabeth Warren, an unofficial student group organized to help elect Massachusetts Democratic Senate candidate and Harvard Law Professor Elizabeth Warren, will today run voter registration drives as part of a statewide College Day of Action sponsored by the Warren campaign in an effort to register students to vote for her next fall.

MBTA bans alcohol advertisements on transit systems

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) last month announced that starting July 1, alcohol advertisements will be prohibited from appearing on all of its property, including in subway cars, trains and buses.

Sororities enjoy record recruitment

There were a record 185 participants in last month's sorority recruitment, reflecting a growing interest in Greek life over the past several years at Tufts. That figure is up from 172 in 2011 and 166 in 2010, according to Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Su McGlone.

As we do more and more on our smartphones, issues of privacy become more and more important. Yet the laws surrounding these issues are not up with the times. We have clearly defined decades−old laws establishing what phone companies are and are not allowed to keep track of when we call someone. But similar rules do not exist to protect our location, where we go on the Internet, etc.

Qualters named CELT director

Donna Qualters on Jan. 3 was appointed the new director for the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT). The center, which was founded by Former Dean of Arts and Sciences Robert Sternberg in 2006 and is part of the Office of the Provost, works with and supports university faculty in pioneering new and innovative teaching methods through initiatives such as the Academic Leadership Development Program and the Faculty Fellows Seminar, which helps faculty hone their skills as teachers.
