Cautious optimism in Obama's second term

After a long, challenging campaign against a well?funded opponent and with a struggling economy fo fix, Barack Obama was elected to a second term as President of the United States last night. In his second term, Obama will tackle issues including a domestic unemployment crisis, America's role in the Middle East, possible Supreme Court justice nominations and execution of health care and immigration reforms. Obama began to address these issues during his first four years at the helm, but failed to live up entirely to the message of hope and change that he conveyed throughout his 2008 campaign.

The Senate race between Elizabeth Warren and Senator Scott Brown this year has been intensely contested. Both the Democrats and Republicans have emphasized this race as important for the strength of their national parties. Both parties, along with Super PACs and other outside fundraising groups, have funneled millions into the campaigns, enabling widespread advertisements by both candidates. In Massachusetts, we are remarkably lucky to have two qualified, good choices for Senate. But only one of these two candidates can have your vote, and that candidate should be Warren.

On the morning of Aug. 15, Saudi Aramco, the largest state?owned oil exporter in the world, experienced one of the most destructive acts of computer sabotage on a company to this day. The attacking virus destroyed the hard drives of more than 60 percent of Aramco's computers and wiped out data on the company's servers. As a final touch, the virus replaced all data with an image of a burning American flag.

Bias incidents trivialized too often at Tufts

On Thursday, October 25, Tufts Stand-Up Comedy Collective hosted a show titled "Autumn Jokes." We did not attend this event, and we are not writing to discuss the content of the show whatsoever. Rather, we are writing to address the flyer the group used to advertise its event around campus. "DISSATISFIED WITH THE AMOUNT OF HATE SPEECH HAPPENING AT TUFTS?" the title asked, and after giving the factual information of the show, it ended by urging students to come, "TO SEE BIAS INCIDENTS IN THE MAKING."

Following the late Senator Ted Kennedy's death in 2009, few Massachusetts Republicans wanted to run in the special election for a Senate seat that was predicted to undoubtedly remain in the hands of a Democrat. After all, the last time Massachusetts had elected a Republican Senator was in 1972. The only question among political pundits was whom the Democratic machine would select as heir to the Kennedy throne.

Monday's debate was President Obama's icing on the cake. Unfortunately, the candidates were unable to circle each other like two roosters in a cockfight as they did in the town hall debate. Instead moderator Bob Schieffer had these two seated right next to each other - quite possibly the first and only time the candidates will sit at the same table. The topic drifted slightly from foreign policy to the economy about half of the time with the questionable logic that a weak economy doesn't allow the U.S. to even have effective foreign policy, which made Clinton's "It's the economy, stupid!" tactic during his campaign for office in 1992 look like child's play.
