Nate Boyer: The man behind the kneel

On Monday, Feb. 1,former Army Green Beret Nate Boyer spoke with The Fletcher School in a virtual event hosted by the Fletcher Armed Forces Club, the Fletcher International Security Studies Program and the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life. Boyer, also a former NFL practice squad long snapper, encouraged quarterback Colin Kaepernick to kneel, rather than sit on the bench, to protest racial injustices during the national anthem. In the now infamous saga that has left Kaepernick without an NFL job, Boyer shared his discussions with Kaepernick and the lessons Americans can take from this experience.

Off the Gridiron: Matthew Stafford to the Rams

By trading for Matthew Stafford, the Los Angeles Rams have made a major statement to the rest of the NFL: they are in it to win it. To acquire the former No. 1 pick, the Rams sent their 2022 first-round pick, 2023 first-round pick, 2021 third round pick and starting quarterback Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions. This season revealed that the Rams have a Super Bowl-caliber defense that is held back by their offense, reinforcing the widely held belief that the Rams win in spite of Goff — and not because of him.

Tufts athletes ask for spring season, NESCAC waits to make decision

If the spring 2021 season were to be canceled, student-athletes who play spring sports would lose two consecutive seasons, which would be "detrimental to the mental health" of these student-athletes in particular, the letter said. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the NESCAC to cancel the spring 2020, fall 2020 and winter 2020–21 seasons.

If I tried to count the number of fiascos, scandals, controversies or near-heart attacks in sports this year, I’d be here all day. Today, I instead wish to look forward to 2021, a year that promises to still be difficult but with a markedly greater sense of hope.

Wonder Women: Naomi Osaka

Even if you barely follow tennis, chances are you may have come across the 23-year-old sensation at some point. Her victory over Serena Williams in the 2018 U.S. Open final thrusted her into the national spotlight, and she’s only been adding to her titles since then.

COVID-19 wreaks havoc in NFL Week 12

With 2020 being the crazy year it has been, it is no surprise that the NFL would deal with its own uncertainties caused by the pandemic. Teams knew from the beginning that if they wanted to have a season, they would have to adapt and roll with the challenges that were thrown their way.

Hoops Traveler: Morality or expediency?

On the one hand, basketball’s ability to derive equal passion from people of different cultures and creeds is its single most powerful gift, something that I have shown repeatedly in this column. At what point do you need to stay firm in your values and take a stand?

The Turf Monster: Sports, holidays, an NBA Christmas present

Christmas belongs completely to basketball. Whatever your family’s preference may be, you’ve likely caught a glimpse of one of these marquee games at a holiday gathering. For some, it’s background noise for prepping the turkey. For others, it’s an intensive three hour-plus ritual, orchestrated to the minute.
