As December falls and the month-long winter break approaches, a quarter of Tufts' students' dreams of Costa Rican vacations are overshadowed by the impending reality of graduation and entrance into the "real world." Many members of the Class of 2005 are using the winter vacation to apply and interview for jobs.
Their heads full of information from career services counseling sessions, resume reviews, and networking sessions, students try to make sense of the job market while balancing home, friends, and sanity.
Senior Mike Doan started the process this summer, but he will be continuing the
application process during this vacation.
"I'm looking forward to independence and the freedom to live my own lifestyle," Doan said, referring to life after college.
"My only fear is having to deal with 'real world' issues such as paying for insurance, and possibly getting fired if I'm not performing well," Doan said.
Senior Kate Hofmann shies away from her impending independence. "I'm definitely dreading self-sufficiency," she said. "I will be responsible for everything: rent, food, and everything else that I take for granted now."
"I'm also dreading how life is going to get less relaxing," she continued. "I won't be able to just skip work, or sleep in if I am exhausted; projects won't be able to be late, and your boss will be much less understanding."
What do you dread most about next year?
Not having a specific plan and not knowing what I'm going to do.
