Tufts Jumbos Fall Season Report Card

Men's Cross Country: Led by junior Matt Lacey and sophomore Josh Kennedy, the team completed the Triple Crown this fall for the second straight year, winning, NESCAC's, ECAC's, and Div. III New England's in three consecutive weeks. While falling slightly short of expectations at Nationals, the squad came in sixth, its best finish in school history. Grade: A

Women's Cross Country: Junior Rebecca Ades' 71st place individual finish at Nationals capped off a strong season put forth by the young Jumbos. Freshmen Katy O'Brien and Catherine Beck led a strong first year class which showed promise could help the team to a berth at Nationals in 2005. Grade: B

Field Hockey: Under first year coach Tina McDavitt, Tufts exceeded all expectations this season, advancing all the way to the NESCAC semifinals following a fifth place regular season finish. The team was led by junior tri-captain Lea Napolitano and senior tri-captain Dana Panzer, who set a single-season scoring record with 33 points. Grade: A-

Football: A strong defense sweetened an otherwise tough season for the Jumbos, which was highlighted by a homecoming victory against Bates (14-12) and an upset victory over Amherst (10-3). Freshman Adam Arsenault was given one of the league's highest honors in being named NESCAC Defensive Rookie of the Year. Senior quad-captain Chris Lawrence and sophomore Chris Decembrele also earned All-NESCAC honors. Grade: C

Men's Soccer: Despite a very young squad under coach Ralph Ferrigno, the men's soccer team put forth an 8-6-1 season, and came seconds away from upsetting second-seeded Middlebury in the conference quarterfinals. Junior Todd Gilbert led the team in scoring with five goals, seven assists and 17 points. Grade: B

Women's Soccer: Despite a slow start, the women's soccer team came on strong late in the regular season, winning six conference games in a row and earning a home playoff game against Williams, which it ended up losing. The team was led by senior Catherine Benedict and freshman Martha Furtek, both All-NESCAC selections. Grade: B+

Women's Tennis: Despite dropping dual matches against Wellesley and Middlebury on consecutive weekends in October, the highly-touted women's tennis team finished the season strong with a second place finish at the New England Championships. Sophomore Jen Luten capped off a productive season atop the Jumbo lineup with wins in the top singles and doubles (with classmate Kylyn Deary) flights. Grade: B+

Volleyball: Led by senior co-captains Ali Sauer and Emily Macy, and sophomore Kelli Harrison, the volleyball team advanced to the NESCAC finals for the first time since 1996 after an impressive regular season in which it finished 28-6. Harrison was given All-American Honorable Mention honors, while Evans and Macy earned All-Region honors. Freshman Kay Lutostanski was named NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Grade: A
