Ed Cabellon, former director of the Mayer Campus Center, has left Tufts to accept a position as the associate director of the Rondileau Campus Center at Bridgewater State College (BSC) in Bridgewater, Mass.
Cabellon played a key role in revamping the procedure for Senior Week. He also planned Spring Fling concerts, comedy shows and many different social and leadership programs.
His work with the Programming Board helped to bring Billy Joel to campus in 2001.
Family concerns were the main reason for his decision, Cabellon said. While his commute to Tufts took over an hour, the 15-minute drive to BSC allows him more time with his wife and new baby.
Cabellon said he fell in love with Tufts during his time on campus. "I'll always be a Jumbo, and I plan to keep in touch with many Tufts students," he said.
Associate Director of Student Activities Lynne Stewart is sad to see Cabellon go, but expects he will do well at his new post.
Cabellon "keeps his ear to the ground as far as what students need," Stewart said.
She added that he sincerely advocates for student interests.
Cabellon said he will miss the people at Tufts - including "[the] folks in the Office of Student Activities, [the] Student Affairs Division, [the] non-academic stuff, the folks in Greek Life, and Reslife" - the most. "[They] were really good for me; our office did good work," he said.
Cabellon hopes future classes "continue to do what they do best -- it's the folks who make the place."
In addition to the convenient location, Cabellon looks forward to the expanded responsibilities of his new post at BSC. "I'm running the overall operation of the campus center [including the] information booth, game room, [and a] number of events, not [only] working with just organization," he said.
BSC is a largely-commuter campus with approximately 10,000 students.
While Cabellon said that starting mid-year at BSC will be a challenge, he looks forward to getting to know the student body, planning programming and representing the students' voices to the administration.
The Office of Student Activities will begin recruiting for Cabellon's empty position and accepting applications in the late spring, in hopes of filling his position during the summer.
