Act of intolerance' involving physical, verbal assault alleged in Bush Hall

In the early morning of Jan. 29 Tufts police responded to a possible "act of intolerance" in Bush Hall towards a student due to sexual orientation, according to Tufts University Police Department (TUPD) Sergeant Chris McGee.

There were allegations of both physical and verbal assault. The victim sustained minor injuries but did not need any medical attention. Many witnesses were present, all of whom were identified as Tufts students and one of whom reported the incident.

One victim and one suspect have been identified. The details of the case are still open to investigation.

The police have received conflicting reports from the victim, the suspect, and the witnesses and are trying to learn the motivation for the assault.

Though McGee acknowledged that the suspect defended his actions, criminal charges may still be pursued.

"The matter may go criminal and it may not, depending on further investigation from us and the Deans' office," McGee said.

More reporting will follow as the investigation continues.
