Students respond to new policy on cannon repainting

Tufts’ recent policy for painting the cannon — the site of a longtime Tufts tradition — has drawn student criticism since its implementation. As of this year, the university now paints the cannon gray every Thursday, along with periodic cleanings. According to Tufts, the shift was made to quell student fears about painting over other groups’ messages, while some students argue that the new regulations limit their free speech on campus.

Tufts humanities faculty research disrupted by federal funding changes

Faculty research at Tufts has been limited by the cancellation of grants and the withdrawal of research funding across the country since President Donald Trump took office last winter. These changes, following the shuttering of federal agencies and shifts in research priorities by the federal administration, have left faculty members in humanities departments are facing uncertainty with limited institutional support.

Tufts pilots new faculty Mortgage Assistance Program

This summer, Tufts piloted a Mortgage Assistance Program in an effort to aid faculty in taking out a second mortgage on their home at a low interest rate. The program follows the recommendation of the Faculty Housing Task Force, formed in the spring of 2024 to improve access to pre-existing faculty housing benefits.

Q&A: Outgoing TCU President Joel Omolade discusses his term, the Senate’s future

Outgoing Tufts Community Union Senate President Joel Omolade sat down with the Daily to reflect on his presidency and the Senate’s accomplishments. Originally from the Bronx, N.Y., Omolade is a senior majoring in political science and community health and a member of the Children of Cultures of Africa dance team. He is also the former president of Tufts’ resident assistants union.

Somerville City Council approves allocation of nearly $3 million in funding from Community Preservation Act

The Somerville City Council voted to approve the allocation of nearly $3 million in funding collected through the Community Preservation Act on Feb. 13. These funds will go to various projects throughout Somerville related to the preservation of historic buildings, maintenance of public open spaces, affordable housing initiatives and support for local nonprofits and community organizations.

Somerville City Council reconfirms status as sanctuary city

The Somerville City Council approved a resolution on Nov. 26 reaffirming Somerville as a “Welcoming Community for justice, equity, and inclusion.” The resolution reconfirmed Somerville’s status as a sanctuary city and communicated the city’s stance on immigration in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s election.

Onero Institute panel discusses state of US democracy in wake of 2024 election

The Tufts chapter of the Onero Institute, a student-led research organization focused on global affairs, held its inaugural panel on Friday. The panel, titled “The Democracy We Need,” focused on the state of U.S. democracy and the results of the 2024 election. Panelists included Consuelo Cruz, an associate professor of political science at Tufts; Malik Mufti, a professor of political science at Tufts; and Sheri Berman, a professor of political science atBarnard College.
