After Massachusetts signed “An Act Relative to Salary Range Transparency” into law, Tufts University launched a faculty range transparency initiative and completed a university-wide faculty market analysis — efforts that have drawn mixed reactions from faculty members.
Tufts University’s research expenses have grown significantly over the last five years despite cuts in federal funding posing serious challenges to research across academia. According to Tufts’ 2025 Annual Financial Report, research expenses increased by $43.3 million, or 24.5%, over the past five years. This growth was accompanied by an $11.7 million, or 4.2%, increase in sponsorship revenue — including grants, contracts and gifts — from the prior fiscal year.
Professor Yu-Shan Lin, former chair of the Department of Chemistry, will become an academic dean for the School of Arts and Sciences in January 2026 following the departure of Dean Sam Thomas, who will assume a new role at the University of Rochester.
Tufts’ recent policy for painting the cannon — the site of a longtime Tufts tradition — has drawn student criticism since its implementation. As of this year, the university now paints the cannon gray every Thursday, along with periodic cleanings. According to Tufts, the shift was made to quell student fears about painting over other groups’ messages, while some students argue that the new regulations limit their free speech on campus.
